Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Double-crested Cormorant colony locations to help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Seabirds Workshop
Supplemental_Information:
This dataset is a compilation of data collected by many people, for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data, even for site-specific inquiries. Refer to the original metadata document for data limitations and usage. Title or link is provided within source information. Data was collected, merged and buffered by target feature layer using the following data sources: 1. CWS Seabird Colony data. 2. CDC Pelagic Bird data. Identifies species as element occurrences.

Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS). Dataset Name: Sites.shp. Includes the locations of all known seabird colonies. Points representing seabird colony locations were digitized using a 1:250000 basemap. Locations of all colonies were checked against 1:20000 TRIM and marine digital charts. Some of the colonies were shifted slightly to correspond to visible islands. Contains data from other sources with surveys conducted after 1989. Data sources include BCMOE, Parks Canada, Laskeek Bay Conservation Society and Bamfield Marine Station. Refer to original metadata document for data usage and limitations. Metadata document: bc_seabirdColonies_to_2007_updatedJune2008_meta.doc.

CDC Pelagic Bird data. Dataset name: Pelagic_Birds_CDC.shp. Mapped areas of land/water (Element Occurrence) in which a species or ecological community is, or was, present and provincial ranking applied. The CDC follows NatureServe mapping methodolgy whereby Element Occurances are depicted as polygons. Locations are supplied via lat/long coordinates, and bufferred according to locational uncertainties. Original metadata document: Online <http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/cdc/gis/eo_data_fields_06.htm>

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
--> Prepared CWS dataset:
Within SiteSurveys geodatabase table, selected by attributes all DCCO (Double-crested Cormorant) and exported into separate table. To maintain one-to-many relationship between spatial and aspatial, joined Sites spatial point layer to DCCO table via GISkey field.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Displayed XY data using newly created X_COOR and Y_COORD fields and using PCS Albers as coordinate system imported from Sites.shp. Exported data into feature class. Added 3 new fields using Add Field tool: Feature, Data_Source, Dataset_ID. Populated fields using Calculate Field tool. Feature field calculated to equal the common name of the marine feature. Data_Source field calculated to equal the name of the dataset the data was derived from. Dataset_ID field calculated to equal the common dataset identifier as categorized by BCMCA.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Re-projected from PCS Albers to NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers using Project tool. Deleted all unnecessary fields using Delete Field tool.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Reviewed all CWS colony points: kept the point representing the most current inventory year. All other points were deleted.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Buffered CWS colony point data to 2000m (radius) using Buffer tool. This buffer distance follows the methodology used in the CWS Marine Birds Areas of Interest database.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
--> Prepared CDC dataset: Using select by attributes, selected all DCCO features and extracted into seperate feature class using NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers as coordinate system. Overlaid both CWS and CDC datasets and reviewed attributes. If a CWS point fell within a CDC polygon or was in close proximity, CWS point was kept to represent the colony location in the final feature layer. **1 CDC polygon was found that was not included within CWS colony coverage.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Merged CWS and CDC prepared datasets using Merge tool to create one layer storing all Double-crested Cormorant colony data. During merge process like fields were combined using Field Map window to eliminate duplicate or redundant column headings. Field map was also used to eliminate unnecessary fields not applicable for final feature layer requirements.

On a few of the islands along the B.C. coast, seabird nesting sites were located in several discrete locations. In these cases the main island is named first, followed by the specific location (eg. "(Kunghit Island) Annis Point" ).

Attribute_Definition:
The number of pairs of nesting birds. (only used for those species which are reported as pairs - as described for each species in Attribute Accuracy Logical Consistency Report and Entity Type - SpeciesID, and Entity Type - Technique). Note: A value of 0 indicates that there were no birds of the particular species breeding in that particular year, but had been reported as breeding in previous surveys. If a species simply does not have an entry for a given survey year, then that species was not surveyed in that year (this does not, in any way, reflect the current status of that species in the given area).A value of 9999 is used to mean Not Applicable, that is when the number of birds is not reported as pairs, but rather as individuals (or in the case of Reef Island in 1985 and 1995, the value for ANMU is reported as the number of nesting burrows). In these cases, there will be a value in either the Individual or Burrows column.
