Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Giant Kelp biobands that informs the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Marine Plants Workshop. Areas not showing Giant Kelp biobands can be assumed to be a Giant Kelp absence. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
This dataset contains a subset of data collected by the provincial government in an effort to map and classify the entire BC coastline between 1995 and 2002. The provincial physical shore-zone mapping initiative was developed for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data, even for site-specific inquiries. Refer to the original metadata linked within the source information for more information on the mapping and classification process.

Provincial Shore-Zone Mapping (1995 - 2002). Dataset name: SHZN_BIOBANDING_LINES_SP from the Sept 2008 LRDW download. Biobanding extraction was undertaken by Brian Woodman, contractor for the Shorezone oracle data maintenance. Processing steps used are decribed in "Process Step" tab. Refer to the original metadata link below for more information on the mapping and classification process.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Biobanding process steps undertaken by Brian Woodman: Biobanding is a many-to-many join between the xshore components table and the bioband codes. On the database, a MATERIALIZED_VIEW was built that is essentially a crosstab query of the data. A crosstab was decided upon because it shows where the biobands ARE but also where they are NOT, which is significant to end users. The fields from the xshore components table that join to the xref table are essentially the fields that make up the phyident plus the zone and component i.e. region, section, unit, subunit, zone, component
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The BIOBANDING_MVW was then linked to the spatial arcs using an SDE spatial view query (SVW).
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
If the spatial view is too large and slow to load from the LRDW, a process created by Al Sutherland was used to create a specific layer for the SVW and populate it using an FME script. Any SHZN layer in the LRDW with the '_SP' suffix is one of these i.e. SHZN_BIOBANDING_LINES_SP.

Process_Description:
Biobanding processing steps undertaken by Coastal Resource Mapping. The methods used to extract marine feature bioband data is as follows: Using select by attributes, select all "MAC" features with Biodistribution code equal to "C" or "P" and export into a feature class. Select by attribute example: [MAC] = 'C' or [MAC] = 'P'.

Deleted all Bioband fields except "MAC" using Delete field tool.
