Description:
Abstract:
The Geoduck catch and effort grid dataset has been assembled directly from the Shellfish Stock Assessment harvest log database located at the Pacific Biological Station (PBS). The dataset has been modified to meet the sensitive nature of the data as per the Access to Information Act20(1)(b,c); which specifies that Fisheries and Oceans Canada will not disclose to a third party confidential information that may prejudice the competitive position of the fisher, in which fishing location has been identified as one of the entities to be protected. There was a 4km x 4km grid used in the desensitization process as well information was limited to total Effort (hr) and total Catch (lbs). The dataset is comprised of Geoduck species only and specifically targets the 2000-2005 fishing seasons.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to display complete, up-to-date information on commercial Geoduck fishing activities along the coast of British Columbia for the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. This dataset was originally developed in fulfillment of a request by the Oceans Action Plan (OAP) committee with the intent to contribute to management plans within the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA). It was subsequently provided to the British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA). Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
All fishing locations were derived for coordinates that have been provided by fishermen; 80% of the data had latitude & longitude which could be mapped.
Due to the sensitive nature of the data not all of the information in the database can be shown spatially. The data availability for this data set is 95.3%

Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Value: Effort_hr
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
A total effort in hours needed to catch 'x' amount using the Dive_Time field /60 (convert minutes into hours) from the dbo_viewDiveLogsGeoDuck database
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Value: Catch_lbs
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
A total catch in pounds per species using the Tot_Landing from the dbo_viewDiveLogsGeoDuck database
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data has been cleaned using a dangle length of .001m and fuzzy tolerance of .0001m A 4km x 4km grid was used with an grid origin of: Easting -27940m, Northing 94650m To meet the sensitivity requirements of the Access to Information Act a count of 3 or more licenses (Tab_Num field used), that were fishing within the same grid cell and within the same fishing season (Year field used) was used *note : this is not a single license per boat fishery, license stacking occurs therefore license instead of vessel was used to resolve sensitive nature of data. To allow for more data to be shown the data was amalgamated across all years where accurate spatial information was provided.

Process_Description:
- In ArcMap "Add xy Data" using the Lon & Lat fields from the dbo_viewDiveLogsGeoDuck database - Export the event data to create a point shapefile - Define Projection of the exported DiveLogsGeoDuck shapefile to Geographic Coordinates (Fishermen supplied coordinates) - Reproject DiveLogsGeoDuck shapefile to Nad83 Albers - Within ArcMap imported the new Albers DiveLogsGeoDuck points and 4km x 4km grid polygonal shapefile - Eliminated those arrant points not falling within the Pacific Coastline from DiveLogsGeoDuck shapefile. Errors mostly due to invalid coordinates provided by fishermen - Joined the 4km x 4km grid to the DiveLogsGeoDuck point file based on they're "Spatial Location" - Exported the attribute table from the output shapefile from the join and imported the DBF into the Sensitive.mdb database - Selected the interested season in the "GDLicensestep0" query saved & the closed the query - Ran the "GDMacro" in the Sensitive.mdb - Recorded the percentage of data used that met the sensitivity requirements - Exported the results of the Macro as a DBF file - In ArcMap imported the resultant DBF file and joined it to the 4km x 4km grid shapefile using "GridC"(from DBF) & "GridCell"(from 4km x 4km grid) as the join field. Using the "Advanced" option when joining that only includes the joined records - Converted the 4km x 4km grid to a shapefile to make the join permanent - Eliminated all irrelevant fields keeping only the GridCell, Effort_hr and Catch_lbs attribute items

Process_Description:
The individual datasets for Salmon (Chinook, Chum, Coho, Pink, Sockeye), Dungeness Crab, Geoduck, Green Sea Urchin, Groundfish Trawl, Halibut, Herring Roe, Humpback Shrimp, Krill, Pink Shrimp, Prawn, Red Sea Urchin, Sablefish (longline and trap), Sardines, Schedule II, Sea Cucumber, Sidestripe Shrimp and Rockfish Hook and Line were processed following a defined set of parameters and then combined together to provide a per planning unit catch for each individual fishery.
Processing Steps for data are as follows: 1. Have a clean PU file with only the Unit_ID 2. Make sure projection is in NAD 83 Environment Albers 3. Union the PU file with the fishery 4. Remove any polygons outside the study area 5. Add New_Area field + calculate the area in square meters 6. Determine Frequency (Toolbox>Analysis>Stats>Frequency) where the input is the unioned shapefile, the frequency file is FID_commer and the summary field is New_Area 7. Join the Frequency table to the Union Output (FID_commer to FID_commer) 8. Export joined file with new name (use _v2 at the end) 9. Add new field (Catch_PU) as a Double 10. Calculate the Catch per PU: Catch x New_Area / New_Area1 11. Open up the dbf in Excel and save as .xlsx. 12. Insert Pivot Table, Select Unit_ID as the row label and Catch_PU as the ? values. Then select all values for Catch_PU and copy and paste special (values) into new excel worksheet. 13. In Excel, generate full commercial fisheries table by selecting the values from the individual excel worksheets, providing the proper coding, and ensuring the numbers are correct. 14. Save completed fisheries database in Excel as .xlsx, Open the table in Microsoft Access, and re-save as a .dbase IV 15. Open the new .dbf in ArcInfo and join the commercial fisheries table to a clean PU file
