Description:
Abstract:
This data represents the relative subsurface hydrocarbon exploration potential of sedimentary basins along the British Columbia coast.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on offshore oil and gas prospectivity along the coast of British Columbia for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Completeness_Report:
Areas do not extend to deepwater areas known to have thick sediments and where natural gas hydrates are likely and therefore is not inclusive all areas where of potential exists within Canada's Pacific Ocean.
Areas not ranked are uncertain and either of low prospectivity or unexplored and un-assessed.
Development potential presumes one has enough information to characterize where all oil and gas fields reside or are going to be found and in what the commercial reserve volumes are going to be. That information does not exist for the offshore basins. The limited number of wells drilled to date and early vintage and nature of drilling effort to date has not been sufficient to appraise basin potential. Presently geologists are reliant on assessments of resource potential which are geographically vague until drilling and exploratory efforts result in discovered resources or are unsuccessful and efforts or expenditures are no longer justified.
Some other maps showing offshore oil and gas portray 4 basins (Georgia, Tofino, Winona and Queen Charlotte). There is a partial separation of the Queen Charlotte Basin from the Tofino/Winona areas where the Scott Islands are but further division to the southwest would be a subjective demarcation line of little relevance to the discussion on prospectivity.
Shell and Chevron geologists have not had the time to compile a relative breakout of prospective vs more prospective areas for Tofino and Winona Basin areas off the west coast of Vancouver Island. The areas can probably be differentiated at some point in future.
It is not appropriate for companies to comment the resource potential of each other's tenures given the competitive nature of the oil and gas industry. Suncor (formerly PetroCanada) shoul be contacted for their views on prospectivity portrayal on north and west portion of Graham island and along eastern margin of the basin (where they hold tenure). They may have their own concepts based on their own historical proprietary seismic data.
Tenure holders for the Georgia Basin (Conoco et al) could be contacted for Georgia Basin exploration potential resource assessment.
Dr. T. Schumann and Dr. M. Whiticar of UVic have performed basin modeling work on basin transects in several offshore areas and would be a source of additional or alternative perspectives.

Process_Description:
CorelDraw files were provided by Peter Hannigan in February 2009. These files, based on Hannigan et al. 1998 and Hannigan et al. 2005 were converted to JPEGs and georeferenced using the North America Albers Equal Area Conic projected coordinate system. Oil and gas plays (prospective areas) illustrated in figures 10, 31, 33, and 35 were digitized and attribute information was entered. Dataset reprojected to NAD_1983_Albers. The Queen Charlotte Basin data was then updated with the edges from Hannigan et al. to capture prospective areas from the Georgia and Tofino basins.

Process_Description:
Chevron geologists and GIS staff modified the edges of this revised QCB dataset to correspond with their understanding of the sediment edges in the younger (Tertiary) basin, of places where older underlying basement sediment assemblages are present and of areas that they felt to be collectively prospective or more prospective. Chevron and Shell geologists felt the earlier versions of the map depicted the prospectivity of only one of the many layers in the basin (i.e., the Cretaceous play as defined by the GSC). The resulting map represents a merging of the potential of several vertically-stacked plays and could best be described as "Chevron after Hannigan et al." The edits met with the approval of Shell Canada Representative [Clinton Tippett, Ph.D., P. Geol. - Principal Regional Geologist (Canada) UAX/N/T; New Ventures and Business Development - Onshore Technical Evaluation; Shell Canada Limited; 400 - 4th Avenue S.W., P.O. Box 100, Sta. M, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2P 2H5; Telephone: 403-691-4274; E-mail: clinton.tippett@shell.com].
Chevron geologists had not looked at the Georgia Basin in much detail but do recognize some unconventional gas potential onshore and offshore in the Cretaceous and including the Tertiary under the Fraser River delta. They indicated it is reasonable to adopt Hannigan edges and call it prospective.

Process_Description:
Peter Hannigan, Geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, reviewed a final 11x17 map of the data and commented: "I don’t believe that I see any inaccuracies in the map from the information [Corel Draw Files] that was sent back in 2009. For your interest, I am now working on a Mineral and Energy Resource Assessment study on the proposed areas of interest by DFO surrounding the Hecate Sponge Reefs. This study will be published as a Geological Survey of Canada Open File Report this year. We are presently working on minor refinements of the prospectivity map around these areas of interest.".
Clinton Tippett, Ph.D., P. Geol. - Principal Regional Geologist for Shell Canada also spoke with "Peter Hannigan to let him know the logic that we used to revise the wording in the resource potential side, including the use of the QCB recovery efficiencies for the whole of the West Coast, with caveats related to small pools. He seemed OK with this."
