Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and socio-economic spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Dictyoneurum californicum (including species previously identified as Dictyoneuropsis reticulata) presence that helps inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Marine Plants Workshop.
Supplemental_Information:
**Please note that this feature has been updated since the Marxan analyses were run and the feature data no longer match the Marxan-ready data.**
This dataset is a compilation of data collected by many people, for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data, even for site-specific inquiries. Refer to the original metadata document for data limitations and usage. Title or link is provided within source information. Data was collected and merged by target feature layer using the following data sources: 1. UBC Herbarium (Algae Export.XLS). Identifies various algae species observations. 2. CDC. Identifies species as element occurrence's.

Process_Description:
--> To prepare CDC dataset:
Re-projected CDC's alga_eos.shp from an Unknown Coordinate System to NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers imported from CMN's BS_EG95.shp. Converted shapefile to feature class using feature class to feature class tool. Selected from CDC_algae_eos.shp all marine target features identified in Plants workshop and exported into separate feature classes. Using ArcMap, all records applicable to workshop target species were selected in the attributes table, exported into a feature class, and stored within the Algae Geodatabase.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Added 3 fields to CDC feature layers: Feature (common name of marine feature identified), SOURCE_DATA (dataset shapefile name), Dataset_ID (dataset common identifier as per BCMCA dataset DB notes)
To add fields, used the add field tool in batch mode (right click tool in toolbox and select batch) to update all feature classes at once. Click and drag each feature into the batch field window to populate one row for each feature. To set each feature classes' tool parameters, scroll to the right in the table.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Populated the fields using the calculate field tool in batch mode. Feature fields were calculated to equal the "SNAME" column. SOURCE_DATA fields were calculated to equal the name of the shapefile or feature class that the data was derived from. Dataset_ID fields were calculated to equal the common dataset identifier as categorized by BCMCA.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
--> To prepare UBC dataset:
Converted UBC Algae Export.xls table into dbase format so that the XY coordinates stored in the records could be plotted spatially and exported as point feature classes. In the Algae Export excel sheet, majority of the coordinates had been converted to decimal degrees in two unnamed columns that were formatted to "scientific" and were displayed in scientific notation. This column was changed to "number" format to two decimal places. Two new columns were created to store decimal degrees: "LatDD" and "LongDD". For the coordinates not previously converted into decimal degrees: converted using an excel conversion formula (can be found in many formats online). The longitude and latitude columns have the original DM/DMS coords.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Formatted excel spreadsheets for conversion to DBF format. Created new columns in all three worksheets, labeled "LatDD" and "LongDD" to store decimal degrees. Columns without headings or information were removed. Below is a summary of columns removed: From the Postelsia worksheet: Det. Date, Subsp., Subspauth, Var., Varauth.
From the Pterygophora worksheet: Subsp, Subspauth, Var., Varauth., Det. Date
From the Others worksheet: Subsp., Subspauth, Var., Varauth.
Saved excel worksheets as dbase version 4. The saved dbf tables were reviewed to ensure they contained the same amount of records as original excel worksheets, and the decimal degree coordinates were tested against the shoreline trim to ensure the points were in the correct locations around vancouver island. A number of records did not have coordinates and showed up at 0 lat, 0 long. These were deleted during processing.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
All records were plotted and displayed in Arcmap using display XY data tool: Added the DBF table to ArcMap, right clicked, selected display XY Data. Selected appropriate Y and X field LatDD and LongDD respectively. Set the coordinate system to GCS North American 1983.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Turned event layer into feature class and projected data: Right click the event layer and select data, export data and saved as a shapefile. Projected shapefile using the project tool from GCS North American 1983 to NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers imported from CMN's S_EG95.shp. Converted shapefile to feature class using feature class to feature class tool.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Extracted target features (as identified within Plants workshop) into separate feature layers. Duplicate UBC points that had identical attribute and spatial information were deleted. Deleted one erroneous UBC point whose recorded coordinates placed point in the center of southern vancouver island. UBC location information indicates sampling was taken on Sombrio Beach (West Coast VI). CDC data has a polygon located at Sombrio Beach with same collection year and references UBC Herbarium. Based on attributes, the assumption was made that the two points represent the same area, however, UBC coordinate data was recorded incorrectly. Deleted "erroneous" UBC point and retained CDC data. Deleted 3 overlapping (or within close proximity) UBC points. Attribute comparison revealed identical survey collection dates and location descriptions. Added 3 new fields to each of the species-specific feature classes. New fields are as follows: Feature (common name of marine feature identified), SOURCE_DATA (dataset shapefile name), and Dataset_ID (dataset common identifier as per BCMCA dataset DB notes). To add fields, used the add field tool in batch mode (right click tool in toolbox and select batch) to update all feature classes at once. Click and drag each feature into the batch field window to populate one row for each feature. To set each feature classes' tool parameters, scroll to the right in the table.
Populated the fields using the calculate field tool in batch mode. Feature fields were calculated to equal the "scientific name" column. SOURCE_DATA fields were calculated using the dataset source name (i.e. Algae Export.xls). Dataset_ID fields were calculated using the common dataset identifier.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Buffered extracted point feature layers to create polygon representations: **The CDC points are buffered by an uncertainty distance determined using NatureServe’s methodology (<http://www.natureserve.org/prodServices/eodraft/7.pdf>). To keep the datasets consistent, the UBC points were also buffered by a width determined by the precision of the recorded coordinates. On a spherical surface at sea level, one latitudinal second measures 30.82 metres and one latitudinal minute 1849 metres, and one latitudinal degree is 110.9 kilometres. These values were rounded up and points that were precise to the second were buffered by 50 m and points that were precise to the minute were buffered by 2000 m** Created new field called BuffDist_m_ to show applicable buffer distance radius: 50m or 2000m. The buffer tool was used in batch mode (see batch mode explained in step 3) using the BuffDist_m_ field.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
-->To prepare both CDC and UBC feature layers for merge:
Searched for duplicate records between CDC and UBC feature layers. Overlaid both datasets and searched for any UBC data points (unbuffered) that fell within the polygonal area of an CDC polygon. If a UBC point was found within, or in close proximity to a CDC polygon, the observation date of both datasets was reviewed and if found to be the same, the UBC point was deleted.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
To simplify potential issues in the merging process, all CDC feature class layers and all UBC feature class layers were first merged together separately using the merge tool. These were then merged together for a second time so the end resultant feature layer included both UBC and CDC data layers. Individual species were then extracted from the combined datasets.
During UBC merge only the following fields were retained: Date, LattDD (decimal degree latitude), LongDD, BuffDist_m_ (Buffer distance in meters), Feature (Genus and species of workshop target), Source_data (the original shapefile, feature class, or table the information was obtained from), and DatasetID (the common dataset identifier as found within BCMCA dataset DB notes). All records with 0,0 coordinates were removed.
During the CDC merge, only the following fields were retained: LATITUDE, LONGITUDE, DATE_, BuffDist_m_ (Buffer distance in meters), Feature (Genus and Species name of target feature as identified within Plants), Source_data (the original shapefile, feature class, or table the information was obtained from), and DatasetID. **Note: survey date field had its name changed to DATE_ to match the UBC column naming convention.
Process_Step:
Process_Description: Merged the CDC and UBC feature layers using merge tool.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Extracted Dictyoneurum californicum features from the merged CDC and UBC data: Within ArcMap, all records applicable to target feature were selected in the attributes table and exported into a feature class. (right click feature class in table of contents and select data -> export data).
