Abstract:

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to identify the areal extents of Cassin's Auklet foraging habitat on the BC coast to create the feature recommended at the BCMCA Seabirds Experts Workshop. Data presented in 2 x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

Telemetry data points were received from CWS in a spreadsheet. The coordinates for Cassin's Auklet for all years were plotted and exported to a shapefile. A kernel density analysis was performed for the Scott Islands study area using a 100 m cell size and a 20 km search radius.

The raster from the density analysis was converted to a point shapefile using the ArcGIS Raster to Point conversion tool.

Process_Description:

A spatial join was performed on those points to put them into the BCMCA planning units and calculate an average value per planning unit. The natural log of the density was calculated. These values were increased so that the lowest value was equal to 1 and the values were put into the transDensity field. The planning units with a value greater than zero were exported to a new file. An ID field was added and populated with the Marxan ID and any extraneous fields were removed.
