Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify the areal extents of Cassin's Auklet foraging habitat on the BC coast to create the feature recommended at the BCMCA Seabirds Experts Workshop.

Home ranges were done using Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) using Geospatial Modelling Environment (GME). The person that did the original home ranges for CAAU that were published (Boyd et al 2008-Auk 125(1):158-166) were not available, neither were the files that was generated. The tool that was most likely used (Hawthtools) are no longer available and were replaced by GME. To try to reproduce the original results, several band widths and cell sizes were tested in GME and the best results were achieved using Bandwidth PLUGIN and Cell Size 50. Using the telemetry points for each year, home ranges (KDE) were created for 1999, 2000 and 2001 and 50% and 95% home ranges were then determined for each year. The 50% and 95% home ranges were supplied as vector (shapefiles) data for each year.
