- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and socio-economic spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Great Blue Heron nesting sites to help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Seabirds Workshop
- Supplemental_Information:
-
This dataset is a compilation of data collected by many people, for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data, even for site-specific inquiries. Refer to the original metadata document for data limitations and usage. Title or link is provided within source information. Data was collected, merged and buffered by target feature layer using the following data sources:
1. CWS Marine Bird Areas of Interest (CWS_Marine_Bird_Areas_of_Interest_May2007.shp).
2. Parks Canada Great Blue Heron important areas (GreatBlueHeron.shp)

--> Prepared CWS_Marine_Bird_Areas_of_Interest_May2007dataset:
Using select by attributes, selected all records where species equaled 'GBHE' and the data source was the Great Blue Heron Colony dataset. Exported data into a feature class using NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers as the coordinate system. Added 3 new fields using Add field tool: Feature, Data_Source, Dataset_ID tool. Populated fields using Calculate Field tool. Feature field calculated to equal the Species field. Data_Source calculated to equal the name of the dataset from which the data was derived. Dataset_ID calculated to equal the common dataset identifier as categorized by BCMCA. Standardized Feature field species naming convention by using the common name of the marine feature identified rather than the species abbreviation.

Processing undertaken by CRM: Converted shapefile to feature class using feature class to feature class tool. Re-projected from NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N to NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers using Project tool. Note: some of the points were projected incorrectly within original source dataset. Re-defined projection to UTM Zone 9N for following colony ID's: H110-006, H112-003, H508-002, H112-003, H613-004. Re-defined projection to UTM Zone 8N for following colony ID's: H613-005, H613-002, H613-001. Added 3 new fields using Add Field tool: Feature, Data_Source, Dataset_ID. Populated fields using Calculate Field tool. Feature field left blank - no attributes that indicate species. Data_Source calculated to equal the name of the dataset from which the data was derived. Dataset_ID calculated to equal the common dataset identifier as categorized by BCMCA.

--> Checked for overlap between Parks Canada and MBAOI datasets and extracted points not in MBAOI:
Overlaid both Parks Canada and MBOAI datasets. Cross checked Parks Canada Col_ID field with MBAOI Spatial_ID field to ensure all Parks points were incorporated within MBAOI. Parks Canada points not within MBAOI dataset were extracted and buffered to 3000m (radius) using Buffer tool.

Parks Canada extracted points were prepared by CRM following the methodology used in MBAOI Heron data:
A 3 km buffer was used on all Heron points. With the resultant polygons, two methods were used to choose MBAOI.
1.) If the polygon intersected an estuary, it was chosen as an MBAOI.
2.) If the polygon fell within a 100m buffer of the shoreline, it was chosen as an MBAOI.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:

To prepare shoreline data for analysis:
Converted coastline dataset from polygon to line using Feature to line tool. Using select by location, selected all coastline segments that fell within 100m to a buffered (3km) Parks Canada heron point. Buffered selected coastline segments to 100m (radius) using Buffer tool. After buffering the data, the coastline was used to erase any portions that fell on land using the Erase tool. Tool parameters: Input = coastline_line_buff100m, Erase = coastlinefz_poly2.shp. Thus only marine areas were used in analysis.

To extract all Great Blue Heron foraging areas intersecting an estuary:
Used the Clip tool and PECP_estuarypolys_March2007 shapefile as the clip feature to extract all Parks Canada buffered Great Blue Heron areas intersecting an estuary. Tool parameters: Input = PC_GreatBlueHeron_Buff3km.shp, Clip Features = PECP_estuarypolys_March2007.shp.

To extract all Great Blue Heron foraging areas within 100m of a shoreline: Used the Clip tool and coastline_buff100m_outer shapefile as the clip feature to extract all Parks Canada buffered heron areas
intersecting the 100m buffered coastline. Tool parameters: Input = PC_GreatBlueHeron_Buff3km.shp,
Clip Features = coastline_buff100m_outer.shp.

To avoid overlapping areas between clipped estuary and clipped coastline polygons, erased all coastline portions that fell within estuary polygons using Erase tool. Tool parameters: Input = PC_buffGBHE_clip_coastline.shp, Erase Features = PC_buffGBHE_clip_PECP.shp. Added a new field to each of the clipped layers using Add Field tool: Clip_Feature. Populated the field to equal the name of the clipped dataset.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
Merged clipped layers together using Merge tool. During merge process like fields were combined using Field Map window to eliminate duplicate or redundant column headings. Field Map was also used to eliminate unnecessary fields not applicable for final feature layer requirements.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
Erase operation caused small slivers where PECP layer did not quite align with the coastline layer. To eliminate these slivers, reviewed Clip_Feature attribute and merged all coastline areas to adjacent estuaries using "merge" operation on advanced editor toolbar.
