- Description:

- Abstract:
-
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Sandhill Crane nesting sites to help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Seabirds Workshop

Refer to the original metadata document for data limitations and usage. Title or link is provided within source information. Data was collected, and compiled by target feature layer using the following data sources:
1. RC Sandhill Crane data (07nests.shp).
2. RC/MOE Sandhill Crane Nest Sites 2008 (2008nestswitheggs.shp)

Raincoast Conservation Foundation (RC) Sandhill Crane data. Dataset name: 07nests.shp. Metadata document: bcmca SACR background.doc.
07nests: Confirmed nest sites - received from Krista Roessingh
The data contained in layers was gathered between May 5th and August 31st, 2007, primarily by my field assistant, Ingmar Lee, and I. A helicopter survey was carried out in 2006 by Dr. Penn and assistants during a pilot study. That survey helped to identify the types of habitats frequented by cranes on the central coast and potential locations of several nest sites. In 2007 we resurveyed the same area to confirm crane locales. We conducted a 4-day helicopter survey from May 14-17th with Dr. Briony Penn and Don Arney as volunteer pilot. The surveyed area extended from half-way up Aristazabal Island in the north to the south end of Hunter Island in the south (not including the Goose Group), and from the outer coast to the inner islands. The survey primarily covered boggy areas and estuaries. Most of the locations where cranes were flushed from bogs were searched on foot after the nesting season to confirm nest locations. Exploratory boat and ground surveys were conducted throughout the season as we relocated nest sites and visited areas identified by local people as potential crane locales. As these surveys were exploratory and not complete, there may be other crane nest, roost and foraging sites within the study area not represented in the data. Nest, roost, and foraging site fidelity from year-to-year are unknown, but local knowledge of some of these locations indicates that fidelity is likely to be high.

Deleted unnecessary fields using Delete Field tool. Added 3 new fields using Add Field tool: Feature, Data_Source, Dataset_ID. Populated fields using Calculate Field tool. Feature field left blank - no attributes that indicate species. Assumed eelgrass presence based on shapefile name. Data_Source field calculated to equal the name of the dataset from which data was derived. Dataset_ID field calculated to equal the common dataset identifier as categorized by BCMCA.
