Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Semi-Palmated Plover nesting to help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Seabirds Workshop. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

<<The methods used to create the Breeding Bird Atlas point dataset for the BCMCA are as follows >> Created a new point shapefile with appropriate fields and coordinate system. Used a verbal account of SPPL nest locations in Haida Qwaii in conjunction with the Breeding Bird Atlas (BBA) to digitize nesting sites. Since the BBA only provides a 10km x 10km square with which to locate nesting sites, the verbal directions helped narrow down a more precise location.

The Select By Location function was used to select the planning unit polygons (dfo_bc_2K_4K_combined.shp) that intersected Semi-Palmated Plover nesting points and lines (PC_BBA_SemiPalmatedPlovers_Nest, PC_SemiPalmatedPlovers_Nests feature classes). The selection was then exported to a new feature class. The [ID] field was added and populated with MARXAN IDs. The [PRESENCE] field was added and populated with '1'.
