Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of a subset of the shorebird staging areas in BC that are surveyed by CWS in order to help inform the flat staing areas feature identified at the BCMCA Seabirds Workshop. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

Note: Data were not available for all shorebird staging areas in BC. Data was collected and summarized using the follwing sources: Canadian Wildlife Services Shorebird Survey Results (Summary_Peeps_Tof_Sid_Bruns.xls).

Printed maps from CWS containing hand drawn polygons of shorebird staging areas for Sidney Island and Brunswick Point were scanned to JPEGS then subsequently georeferenced and digitized using the CHS coastline. Staging area polygons for Tofino were digitized using a printed map from a CWS technical report which was scanned and georeferenced.

Using the Shorebird Survey Results from CWS, bird count data was summarized. Average bird counts for all years at each site were calculated then entered into the AVG_CNT field. Total number of surveys performed for all years at each site was calculated and entered into the SURV_TOT field. The average number of surveys performed at each site was calculated and entered into SURV_AVG.
