Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify areal extents of Storm Petrel colony locations to help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Seabirds Workshop.
Supplemental_Information:
This dataset is a compilation of data collected by many people, for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data, even for site-specific inquiries. Refer to the original metadata document for data limitations and usage. Title or link is provided within source information. Data was collected, merged and buffered by target feature layer using the following data sources: 1. CWS Seabird Colony data. 2. Parks Canada Nesting Seabird Colony data.

Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS). Dataset Name: Sites.shp. Includes the locations of all known seabird colonies. Points representing seabird colony locations were digitized using a 1:250000 basemap. Locations of all colonies were checked against 1:20000 TRIM and marine digital charts. Some of the colonies were shifted slightly to correspond to visible islands. Contains data from other sources with surveys conducted after 1989. Data sources include BCMOE, Parks Canada, Laskeek Bay Conservation Society and Bamfield Marine Station. Refer to original metadata document for data usage and limitations. Metadata document: bc_seabirdColonies_to_2007_updatedJune2008_meta.doc.

CWS Marine Bird Areas of Interest. Dataset Name: CWS_Marine_Bird_Areas_of_Interest_May2007.shp. Dataset was only used where CWS and Parks Canada datasets lacked coverage. Combines data from other requested datasets: Coastal Water bird inventory, Moulting Seaducks, Seabird Ship Surveys, WVI Waterbird Survey, Great Blue Heron Colony datasets, Herring Spawn, Pelagic Seabird Survey, Seabird Colony Inventory. Many of the MBAOI's were chosen based upon an area's significant bird numbers, hence, dataset may not include full coverage of BCMCA marine target features. In most datasets, a buffer distance was determined and applied based on the species type or survey method. After buffering the data, a 1:20,000 TRIM shoreline was used to ERASE any portions that fell on land. Refer to the original metadata document for a full descritpion: CWS Marine Bird Areas of Interest project_May2007_meta.doc.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Overlaid both Parks Canada and CWS colony data and reviewed each point. The following rules were used to create final feature layer: 1. If duplicate inventory years were recorded within CWS dataset, the point representing the most recent inventory year was kept. The same approach was used for the Parks Canada dataset. 2. If attributes (location, count and year) matched between CWS and Parks dataset, the CWS point was used and Parks points deleted. 3. In some cases, the most recent inventory date did not provide population estimates. In these cases, both inventory years were kept. This was generally found within Parks data. 4. In some cases, multiple points (CWS and Parks) were located on one island, attribute review revealed different count data. In these cases, PC points were deleted. 5. In some cases, the Parks data had the most recent inventory date. If the CWS attributes matched Parks, the most recent Parks inventory point was used to represent the seabird colony location and the CWS point was deleted. 6. In some cases, the CWS data summarized all Parks count data within small areas (i.e. Harrison Island) into one generalized point. In these cases, if the summed Parks count data matched CWS count data, the generalized CWS point was used to represent the seabird colony. Note: CWS metadata mentions NestPair estimated numbers are rounded off. In some cases, count attribute comparison between Parks and CWS data were slightly off due to rounding. In these cases, CWS point was kept. Both datasets contain source information in the table of attributes. For the CWS dataset, the source is listed as a number (DataRef field) and the metadata contains a listing of each source dataset by number. For the PC dataset, the source if written out in the file (Source field).

Merged CWS Seabird Colony and Parks Nesting Colony datasets using Merge tool to create one dataset storing all Storm Petrel Colony point data. During merge process like fields were combined using Field Map window to eliminate duplicate or redundant column headings. Field Map was also used to eliminate unnecessary fields not applicable for final feature layer requirements.
Process_Step:

Buffered merged colony point data to 5000m (radius) using Buffer tool. This buffer distance follows the methodology used in the CWS Marine Birds Areas of Interest database.

--> Reviewed CWS Marine Bird Areas of Interest dataset:
Selected by attributes all records where DATASOURCE equaled Seabird Colony Inventory and species = FTSP or species = LSPE. Checked overlap with both Parks and CWS storm petrel colony locations. All features were duplicated - no MBAOI polygons were used to create feature.

Colonies were grouped based on the site name and the count of nest pairs was summed when both of the storm petrel species (Leach's and Fork-tailed) were observed at the same colony. Relative Importance (RI) field created and populated based on the values in NestPairs. Highly Important = 3 (>5% of total BC population); Moderately Important = 2 (1-5% of total BC population); and Less Important = 1 (<1% of total BC population).

Name of the seabird colony -usually the same as the name of the island on which it is located [these location names are from the Gazeteer of Canada: British Columbia (1985)]. On a few of the islands along the B.C. coast, seabird nesting sites were located in several discrete locations. In these cases the main island is named first, followed by the specific location (eg. "(Kunghit Island) Annis Point" ).

The number of pairs of nesting birds. Note: A value of 0 indicates that there were no birds of the particular species breeding in that particular year, but had been reported as breeding in previous surveys. If a species simply does not have an entry for a given survey year, then that species was not surveyed in that year (this does not, in any way, reflect the current status of that species in the given area). A value of 9999 is used to mean Not Applicable, that is when the number of birds is not reported as pairs, but rather as individuals (or in the case of Reef Island in 1985 and 1995, the value for ANMU is reported as the number of nesting burrows). In these cases, there will be a value in either the Individual or Burrows column. **Note: CWS estimated numbers are rounded off.**
