The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

The purpose of this dataset is to identify and spatially represent herring spawn habitat and the relative value of that habitat through a classification developed by DFO for this purpose to create the feature recommended at the BCMCA Fish Experts Workshop. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

The Cumulative Herring Spawn table was obtained from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Each row of values in the table represents the historical (1928 to present year) herring spawn characteristics of a single kilometre of British Columbia (BC) shoreline identified by a unique, six-digit, section-kilometre code.

All records from the Cumulative Spawn Table obtained from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada website were copied and pasted into excel - May 15, 2009. A new feature class was created from the X/Y table using the respective Lat/Long fields. The Geographic Coordinate System selected for input was WGS84. A new shapefile was then created transforming the spatial reference system into NAD83 BC Environemt Albers to match the BCMCA Planning Units dataset.
