Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and socio-economic spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify mudflats adjacent to estuaries using the British Columbia Biophysical Shorezone Dataset and the PECP estuary dataset to help inform the marine feature identified in the BCMCA Invertebrate Features report. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Refer to the source metadata for further information. Source: British Columbia Biophysical Shorezone Dataset, BC MOE The shoreunit morphology and substrate has been described in terms of 36 different coastal classes in the B.C biophysical shore-zone mapping system. This shapefile has been created by querying classes where the substrate of mudflats is described as a major feature. A spatial query was then performed to keep only sections that intersected or were within 100 meters from estuaries features, taken from the PECP estuaries shapefile created by Canadian Wildlife Service.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
As the primary and foreign keys (PHYIDENT) for the spatial data and table records were not of the same data type, a new string field was created in the MainMVW (MaterializedView) table in the database. This field was populated with the data from the PHYIDENT field.

Process_Step:
Process_Description: A query selecting coastal class 29 was performed
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Main_MVW table was then joined with the spatial data (shorezone line segments) based on the PHYIDENT field. The joined spatial file was then extracted to a new file.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
All of the unnecessary fields were dropped and the coastal_class field was retained.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A unique identifier for each different feature needed by the Marxan software was added in a field called ID
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A spatial query selecting only features that intersected or were within 100 meters of estuaries (estuary features taken from dataset Pacific Estuary Conservation Program (PECP) estuaries released by Canadian Wildlife Series, technical report series number 476) was done. The selected features were extracted to a new file.
