Description:

Abstract:

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to identify the invertebrate species recommended at the BCMCA Marine Invertebrate Experts Workshop.

Source_Contribution: Royal British Columbia Museum - Crustacean specimen records

Process_Description:

Coordinate information was received from the Royal BC Museum in an Excel spreadsheet. Not all received records contained coordinates but all records with coordinates, regardless of precision, were used. Records were extracted based on the species names recommended at the invertebrate workshop. The coordinates were converted from Degrees, Minutes, Seconds or Decimal Minutes to Decimal Degrees for mapping. The coordinates were then plotted and saved to a new point feature class.

Updates to invertebrate data Oct 2012 (All_inverts_Oct31_2012_forBCMCA.xlsx): a similar process to the one above was used to plot coordinate data and export features to a new point feature class. All data (pre and post 2012 update) was merged together, clipped to the EEZ boundary and any duplicate collection ID’s removed.
