Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
To represent the sponge reef feature in British Columbia as recommended at the Invertebrate Experts Workshop and in the Physical Representation Report. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
This vector digital data set delimits the distribution of sponge reefs in the Queen Charlotte Basin and indicates the continuous or incontinuous coverage of the seafloor by sponge reefs. The data was part of the Geographical Survey of Canada's mapping program on the continental shelf.

Process_Description:
The preliminary sponge reef polygons were updated and their detail greatly improved by Fiona Lawson, U.Vic Co-op student, using the following GIS processes: 1.) Sponge reef polygons created using both multibeam and backscatter data. 2.) Huntec External and Internal, as well as Sidescan data used to determine surficial geology (bedrock, till, glaciomarine distal, recent muds/sandy muds, recent sands, or sublittoral sands) along tracklines from cruises 88-007, 02-004, 99-001 and Hudson81 and surficial geology polygons created along tracklines accordingly. 3.) Surficial geology polygons expanded to cover the entire four regions of sponge reefs in the QCB using multibeam and backscatter data along with the interpreted trackline polygons.

Process_Description:
Sponge reef polygons were created in the Agassiz Bank, Portland Canal and Malcolm Island areas by Hayley Linton, U.Vic Co-op student: 1) Multibeam and backscatter data were used in delimiting the sponge reefs in the Agassiz Bank area 2) Multibeam, relief, colour shaded relief and backscatter data were used to delimit the sponge reefs in Portland Canal 3) Multibeam and colour shaded relief were used in delimiting the sponge reefs at Malcolm Island

The dataset was projected to BC Albers to match with the other datasets collected by the BCMCA. The feature was then dissolved and an ID field was added to hold the BCMCA Marxan ID for this feature.
