Description:

Abstract:

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to identify the distribution of marine mammals to help inform the features identified at the BCMCA Marine Mammal Experts Workshop.

These density estimates are based upon whale observations recorded during systematic surveys in the summers of 2004, 2005, and 2006, and environmental parameters including latitude, longitude, and depth. Survey results and modeling work has been peer reviewed (Williams and O'Hara, 2010; Williams and Thomas, 2007).

Process_Description:

Data received as points. The points represented the centroid of a grid cell and were received with attributes that included the modeled count by species and grid cell. The counts were divided by the area (km2) to calculate a density for each species in each grid cell. The points were used to generate a grid with each point the centroid of a grid cell using the Hawth's Tools Create Sampling Plot tool.
