- Description:

- Abstract:
-
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this dataset is to identify the areal extents of sea otter range on the BC coast to create the feature recommended at the BCMCA Marine Mammals Experts Workshop

Two shapefiles showing sea otter range were received: one for the Central Coast, the other for the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The projection was defined as NAD83 (geographic) and the two files were merged using the ArcGIS Merge tool. Once merged, the polygons were dissolved and the file was projected to BC Environmental Albers (NAD83).

To determine the range that was shallower than 50 m, the CHS 75 m bathymetry raster was reclassified to pull out the depths of 50 m and below. That file was converted to polygons. The sea otter range file was clipped to the CHS polygons.

Because the original polygons were not drawn using the TRIM coastline, several inlets were missed and requested for inclusion by the data reviewers. The existing polygons were extended shoreward using heads up digitizing. The seaward boundary was traced to include the entire area in the new polygons (to eliminate small holes and slivers). The resulting polygon was clipped to the TRIM coastline using the ERASE tool.

Additional polygons were evident in the 2009 CSAS report on sea otter distribution. These were digitized, clipped to the 50 m CHS bathymetry file, extended to ensure a match with the TRIM coastline and then clipped to the TRIM coastline. The new polygons were then merged with the original range polygons.
