Description:
Abstract:
A 100 m raster of the Canadian Pacific Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) created for research purposes. The raster provides depth information for the EEZ.
Purpose:
Research and analysis such as marine classification and the development of habitat suitability models. Qualitative assessment of positional accuracy suggests that significant errors exist, however the sources used are self-consistent, making these data suitable as a framework for coastwide, and possibly regional analyses. Regional analyses may benefit from minor shifts in this dataset to align with known control points.
Supplemental_Information:
***This bathymetry dataset has been provided to the BCMCA for distribution to those involved in marine planning work. A similar dataset was used in the BCMCA analyses.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Depths were recorded to nearest metre in source data. However, since the source data were derived from contours, depth accuracy will vary with the density of the contours, and likely decreases with increasing depth. Thus, an accuracy of +/- 10% is likely a reasonable assumption. In coastal areas, a depth of 1 m was arbitrarily used to replace areas incorrectly identified as land in the source data. Portions of these areas could quite deep, however as coastal areas are averaged over the 100m x 100m pixels, the mean pixel depth is unlikely to be > 10 m.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data become sparser with increasing depth likely leading to a loss of resolution at depth. Comparison between LOS and USGS data reveals a number of artifacts in both data sets likely due to interpolation errors from the source data. Additional comparison between the LOS data and a similar data sets derived by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) from the same source data reveal a discrepancy of several hundred metres, likely due to interpolation methods.
Completeness_Report:
The raster is complete for the entire Pacific Canadian Exclusive Economic Zone, and considerably improves on the source data near the coastline.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Based on the comparison with the NRCan data, the horizontal referencing could be off by several hundred metres in places. Neither source data set aligned well with the best available coastline across the entire study area suggesting minor distortions in the projection of the original contour data. However, these data, and the source data sets are self-consistent, and thus provide a suitable framework for studies at coastwide extents. Regional analyses may benefit from minor shifts in this dataset to align with known control points.

Process_Description:
Overview: This work was undertaken in response to the lack of a public domain bathymetry for the Canadian Pacific Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). While similar coverages have been created previously, they are not in the public domain.
The most comprehensive bathymetric data for the region comes from digital nautical charts developed by the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS). These data have been used to derive 2 existing bathymetric models for coastal BC: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) produced a 75 m resolution raster in a NAD 1983 Lambert Conformal Conic projection. This raster includes only the spatial extents of the CHS charts, and no supplemental data. The Living Oceans Society (LOS) produced a 100 m resolution raster in BC Albers projection covering most of the EEZ except for a portion of the SE edge. The LOS bathymetry, developed in the 1990s, combined a number of data sets to augment the CHS data including the BC TRIM coastline and additional depths beyond the extents of the CHS nautical charts (source unknown). See the LOS metadata for more information.
A third raster produced by the US Geological Survey (USGS) at a resolution of 250 m in the Lambert Conformal Conic projection covers a large portion of the Canadian EEZ. This was used to complete the southern portion of the EEZ raster.
Visual inspection determined that all three data sets were missing considerable data in the near shore region (i.e., coastal marine areas were identified as land). Additionally, a random comparison of 5 spatially distinct marine features selected uniformly from across the EEZ study area determined that the LOS and NRCan bathymetries, despite being derived from the same source, were offset by at least 200 m.
Given that the LOS data were augmented with additional data, this was selected as the base data set for the 100 m EEZ raster. It was combined with the USGS raster to fill the SE portion, and a land mask, derived from the latest the latest CHS high water line (HWL), was used to delineate the coastline.
Process details:
1. Create land mask. 1a. The latest CHS HWL compiled from best available resolution marine charts was converted to polygons after cleaning up the edges. 1b. The HWL polygon was combined with an EEZ polygon from COSEWIC to create an Pacific Canadian EEZ marine polygon. 1c. The EEZ polygon was converted to a land mask with a 100 m resolution. The mask was snapped to the LOS bathymetry to avoid shifting the LOS data. 1d. The marine portion of the mask was assigned a depth of 1 m to capture coastal regions.
2. The LOS and USGS data were clipped to the Canadian EEZ.
3. All LOS and USGS non-depth values (i.e., elevations of 0 m or greater) were reclassified to NoData.
4. The three layers were mosaiced such that the LOS data were used first, and any NoData values were then filled first by the USGS data, and finally by the 1 m land mask.
5. The extents of the final raster were then reduced to the extents of the Pacific Canadian coast.
