Description:
Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
This is a summary of shoreunit morphology and substrate in terms of 36 different coastal classes, one of which is "undefined". It is an overall indicator of repeatable collections of across-shore components contained within the unit defined by a systematic consideration of substrate, sediment, width and slope. This dataset has been intersected with 2x2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Note: this dataset does not contain coastal class "Hanging Lagoon", found in the ShoreZone Coastal Classes MVW. Coastal Class "Undefined" (ID 200) has been removed from the dataset.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
3413 spatial records (shoreunits) did not join with the materialized view in the shorezone database and therefore have no attribute information in this final file. The majority of these records have a phyident value of "00/00/0000/00" and are primarily islands or estuaries.

Process_Description:
As the primary and foreign keys (PHYIDENT) for the spatial data and table records were not of the same data type, a new string field was created in the MainMVW (MaterializedView) table in the database. This field was populated with the data from the PHYIDENT field.

The Main_MVW table was then joined with the spatial data (shorezone line segments) based on the PHYIDENT field. The joined spatial file was then extracted to a new file.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
shzn_CoastalClass.shp was intersected with ecosections_dissolved.shp. A new field, MARX_ID, with a text data type was created and populated using the following expression: [ID_12]&[ID_NUMBER]. This created a new unique MARXAN ID by concatenating Shorezone IDs with Ecosection IDs. A new field, ID, was created with a long data type and populated with the values from MARX_ID. The dataset was then dissolved on the ID field.

This dataset was intersected with 2 x 2 km planning units. Fields left over from previous processing steps that were no longer required were deleted. The final file was dissolved based on the Unit ID and ID fields to remove lingering duplicates.
