- Abstract:
-
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
- Purpose:
-
To represent high rugosity areas in British Columbia coastwide out to the limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone (200nm). Dataset presented as 2 x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

"Rugosity can be best defined as the ratio of surface area to planar area. Basically, rugosity is a measure of terrain complexity or the "bumpiness" of the terrain. In the benthic environment, rugosity can be used to aid in the identification of areas with high biodiversity, depending on the scale of the input bathymetry. "
Natural logarithm of rugosity from 75 m bathymetric model of British Columbia coast out to the Exclusive Economic Zone using the Nature Conservancy's application, Benthic Terrain Mapping. The Benthic Terrain Modeller (BTM) tool, a collection of ArcGIS terrain visualization tools developed by the Oregon State University (OSU) Department of Geosciences and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center, was used to calculate the rugosity of the bathymetric grid for the Southern Strait of Georgia. More information on the specific algorithms used can be found in the BTM's documentation (<http://www.csc.noaa.gov/products/btm/>).
Model created by extending the 75m model created for the Gwaii Haanas NMCA south to the bottom of the EEZ.

The Gwaii Haanas model was by mosaicing three bathymetric rasters together:
(1) a 75 m. bathymetric raster created by NRCan for the west coast of BC from 1:250,000 CHS Bathymetric Contours;
(2) a 100 m. bathymetric raster created by LOS for the entire west coast out to the EEZ; and
(3) a 2 m. Multi beam bathymetry raster for Juan Perez Sound. There were some seams evident in the data, at the edges of the mosaiced datasets.
This was extended south to the bottom of EEZ using data obtained from the Marine Geoscience Data System covering block

MGDS permits download of data at a maximum of four times screen resolution. In order to achieve a spatial resolution, 83m, roughly equivalent to the 75m bathymetry used in Gwaii Haanas, the data were downloaded in two halves west and east on either side of -129.
Data sets merged in this order: eew_sw_idwpi, eew_se_idwpi, bathy_mosaic with the first entries in the list having priority. This overwrote the tongue sticking down south from bathy_mosaic.
Anomalies due to overlapping bathymetry datasets of differing resolutions were visually cleaned.

Be advised that this data set is a mosaic of several data sets each of which has been 'cleaned' somewhat. This mosaic is a long way from the source data and was created only to allow bathymetric terrain modelling. It must NOT be used for navigation.

The previous processing steps to mosaic the four bathymetric rasters resulted in a number of unintended "artifacts" that occurred along the seams between raster images. These artifacts consisted of polygons that were incorrectly assigned to rugosity classes where 2 or more raster images joined. The following iterates the process of cleaning up the dataset by removing polygons along seams to the value of the most prominent adjacent polygon. Using both the rugosity shapefile and the original bathymetric rasters obvious artifacts along seams were identified, selected and deleted in an edit session. Certain linear artifacts which ran along seams often branched off of larger polygons that did not need to be removed. Where this occurred the polygons were cut and made into separate polygons and only the artifact was then deleted. The coordinates of each polygon removed was recorded (rugosity_cleanup.xls).

During the feature review, erroneous high rugosity areas in the southwest corner of the EEZ were identified. These areas were likely generated when higher resolution multibeam datasets for this area were mosaiked with the other, lower resolution bathymetry data. These areas were compared to the bathymetry data and artifacts were removed. This process was performed manually and cannot be considered to be highly precise. The clean file was verified by Krista Royle and Greg MacMillan of Parks Canada.
