- Abstract:
-
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this dataset is to identify the spatial extents of seamounts within the BCMCA study area. Data presented as 2 km x 2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Data was collected and extracted from the following datasources:
1. B2B - A combination of GEBCO data atlas, Scripps Institute Bathymetric Atlas of he North Pacific, and the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration Gulf of Alaska Seamount Expedition.
2. SeamountsOnline - A database of known seamounts collected from a variety of sources. For a complete list of sources please check their website.

B2B:
Data were compiled by staff of the Marine Conservation Biology Institute using the GEBCO data atlas, ETOPO2 bathymetry from NGDC, and the 2002 NOAA GOASEX cruise. Best available depth and lat/long data were used.
Data set was compiled by Dave Canny and Peter Etnoyer.

Seamount data for the Gulf of Alaska are the result of GPS and multibeam sonar measurements of minimum seamount depth. Data coded as coming from ETOPO2 may be off by over 200 m depth and 8 km lat/long (Etnoyer, 2002 NOAA GOASEX results). GEBCO data appear to be accurate within .1 degree and 10 m depth.

Baja California to the Bering Sea (B2B) - Priority Conservation Areas. In 2005, MCBI and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America released the study Marine Priority Conservation Areas: Baja California to the Bering Sea (B2B), highlighting the 28 most important places to protect along the North American coastline from the edge of the Arctic Ocean to the Tropical East Pacific. These sites include especially unique areas such as the Gulf of California, important migratory corridors like Unimak Pass, and areas rich in biodiversity such as Monterey Bay. Marine experts consider these areas essential to safeguarding the biological diversity of the West Coast of North America.
This study, along with an associated map, cover a vast region governed by three nations. The conservation model resulting from this work focuses on doing marine conservation at a continental scale and also contains a framework for the first cooperative efforts in marine conservation among Mexico, the US and Canada.

All planning units that intersected a seamount were selected and exported to a new feature class. A new field, PRESENCE, was created and populated with the value "1". Lastly, a new field, ID, was created and populated with MARXAN IDs. Fields left over from previous processing steps that were no longer required were deleted.
