Abstract:
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to identify the BCMCA planning units in which Ruppia have been observed that help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Marine Plants Workshop. Data presented as 2x2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

Data was collected and merged by target feature layer using the following data sources: 1. UBC Herbarium (Ruppia.XLS). Identifies 2 Ruppia observations. 2. rup_Durance.shp. Ruppia points were digitized based on collection work by Cynthia Durance. 3. widgeon_grass_tl. A feature class from the Subtidal_Survey feature dataset in the CRD's Harbours_Atlas geodatabase.

Converted UBC Ruppia.xls table into dbase format so that the XY coordinates stored in the records could be plotted spatially and exported as a point feature class.

Formatted excel worksheet for conversion to DBF. Two new columns were created to store decimal degrees: "LatDD" and "LongDD". Converted DM coordinates to DD using an excel conversion formula (can be found in many formats online). The longitude and latitude columns have the original DM coords.
Saved excel worksheets as dbase version 4. The saved dbf tables were reviewed to ensure they contained the same amount of records as original excel worksheets, and the decimal degree coordinates were tested against the shoreline trim to ensure the points were in the correct locations around vancouver island. 3 records did not have coordinates and were deleted.

All records were plotted and displayed in Arcmap using display XY data tool: Added the DBF table to ArcMap, right clicked, selected display XY Data. Selected appropriate Y and X field LatDD and LongDD respectively. Set the coordinate system to GCS North American 1983.

Turned event layer into feature class and projected data: Right click the event layer and select data, export data and saved as a shapefile. Projected shapefile using the project tool from GCS North American 1983 to NAD 1983 BC Environment Albers imported from CMN's S_EG95.shp. Deleted 3 points without lat/long coordinate data. Deleted 2 points not specific to BC Coastal (Cache Creek & Princeton) region. Deleted one point between Tsawassen ferry terminal & Roberts bank coalport. Coordinates within the UBC Herbarium Ruppia.xls were only accurate to the degree (i.e. 49 degrees N, 123 degrees W). Carrie Robb was in direct contact with data source contact (Cynthia Durrance) and was supplied with more accurate coordinates; included within Rup_Durance.shp.
