Description:

Abstract:: The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Purpose:: The purpose of this dataset is to identify the dune vegetation feature identified in the BCMCA Marine Plant Workshop's Vascular Plant group. Data presented as 2x2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

The information is derived from aerial photography, supported by selective field checking of the data. SEI mapping methodology is based on original air photo interpretation for SEI polygons, or as an SEI theme based on Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) polygons. The following subclass was extracted from the SEI records for Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands and Bowen Island: From Sparsely Vegetated - SV:sd - Coastal sand dunes
The following subclass was extracted from the SEI records for the Sunshine Coast: From HB (herbaceous) - du (dunes) - ridge or hill, or beach area created by windblown sand; may be more or less vegetated depending on depositional activity, beach dunes will have low cover of salt-tolerant grasses and herbs.

Shapefiles were created from each extract.
