The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

The purpose of this dataset is to identify priority eelgrass habitat to help inform the marine feature identified at the BCMCA Marine Plants workshop. Data presented as 2x2 km planning units for MARXAN analysis.

This dataset is a compilation of data collected by many people, for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data, even for site-specific inquiries. Refer to the original metadata document pasted within source information for data limitations and usage. Data was collected, merged, and dissolved by species using the following data sources:
1. Provincial (LUCO) kelp polygons based on aerial overflights and CHS chart data.
2. DFO Quatsino Sound Eelgrass data.
3. Parks Canada Pacific Rim raster and eelgrass polygon data.

Parks Canada Pacific Rim raster data. Dataset Name: zoma_pp. Eelgrass confidence weighted abundance raster. Metadata report: The cell values of each confidence weighted abundance raster range from some negative extreme (representing areas that we are confident the species is absent) to zero (representing areas for which we have no good basis for judgment of relative abundance i.e. data sources conflict and/or we have no data for the area) to some extreme positive value (representing areas that we are confident have high abundance of the species). Intermediate negative and positive values represent an index (product) of our confidence in the data source and relative abundance.
Some known false values exist (in particular values in the vicinity of 329086E,5417687N (UTM10, Nad83) are erroneous and should be set to zero as they are associated with an input data point with incorrect coordinates).

DFO Quatsino Sound Eelgrass data. Dataset name: all_DFO_2005_eelgrass.shp. Eelgrass polygons were created using a series of flora (eelgrass) points taken using a Trimble GPS. Points were taken every 15m (approx) surrounding the inner and outer edge of the eelgrass bed and then were connected during the GIS phase of the project. Eelgrass points are intended to provide a brief description of the substrate as well as its associated flora. Refer to the metadata (updated using ArcCatalog) for more detailed data documentation.

1. dhaegele_eelgrass_a.shp. Metadata document: Haegele Eelgrass Meta.pdf. Extent: BC Coast. The majority of this dataset was compiled and completed in August 2002 and March 2003 based on paper maps that were compiled by Carl W. Haegele in the 1970's and 1980's on the west coast of BC.
2. Eelgrass (coverage). Metadata document: Not supplied, however, updated by CMN using ArcCatalog. Extent: BC Coast. Received from CMN thru Brad Mason (DFO) and Suzanne Richer (Parks). Polygon source indicate that they may be digitized off of nautical charts (i.e. CH3682)
3. BS_EG95.shp. Metadata document: metadata.DBF & bs_eg95.txt. Additional metadata: summarized by CMN using ArcCatalog. Delineates eelgrass in the Baynes Sound Area. Intertidal eelgrass beds in Baynes Sound area were identified from colour airphotos and field surveys done on selected sites the following year.

Prepared CMN SC_Eelgrass_Beds.shp:** XY coordinate system defines a NAD 1927 datum. To overlay with all other data, dataset needed a datum transformation. A test was done transforming NAD 1927 to NAD 1983 using NTv2_Canada. Once the datum transformation was applied, the data was shifted substantially resulting in overland alignment. To determine if data may have originally been defined incorrectly, a second test was done re-defining the projection from NAD 1927 UTM Zone 10N to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N using the Define projection tool. In several test locations, the NAD 1983 data had better alignment with the coastline than the NAD 1927 data. Thus, dataset with NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N was used to create final feature layer.** Re-Defined projection from NAD 1927 UTM Zone 10N to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N using the Define Projection tool. The final BMCA eelgrass polygon feature class was overlaid with the final features for Great Blue Heron Nest Sites (Shorebird feature), Brant Goose (Nearshore Bird feature) and the high value planning units (classes 1 to 3) from the Herring Spawn feature (Pelagic Bird/Fish feature) using 'select by location' and the option to 'add to the currently selected features in...'. The resulting polygons were then exported to a new feature class. These features had been identified in the workshop report to help identify priority eelgrass habitats.
Note: The eelgrass polygons (representing eelgrass beds) were not clipped to the features with which they were overlaid.
