Description:
Abstract:
This dataset identifies the location of exploratory wells drilled off the coast of British Columbia. Exploratory wells are generally drilled as part of the exploration process to test for the presence of oil and gas reserves. It should be noted that data derived from onshore wells (not included with these data) are also relevant to the evaluation of the offshore potential.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on the location of offshore exploratory wells for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. Data attributes have been modified from the source BCMCA data to prepare for intersection with Marxan planning units.

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Offshore drilling occured between 1967 and 1969. This dataset is a subset of the Exploratory Wells for Coastal BC dataset aquired from the Offshore Oil and Gas Atlas. No updates were made to the data, but wells located on land were deleted.

Completeness_Report:
Offshore drilling occured between 1967 and 1969. This dataset is a subset of the Exploratory Wells for Coastal BC dataset aquired from the Offshore Oil and Gas Atlas. No updates were made to the data, but wells located on land were deleted.
The data have the following constraints when being used to show the extent of offshore oil and gas exploration: 1. No drilled onshore wells are included. Data derived from onshore wells are also relevant to the evaluation of the offshore potential. 2. Data does not include locations of known seafloor coreholes or boreholes drilled under scientific DSDP, ODP or IODP drilling programs to evaluate deep ocean basin sediments, which provide information and which may bear on prospectivity assessments for hydrocarbon resources (e.g. deep sea hydrate distribution) 3. Data does not include wells drilled in adjacent State of Washington which lie in same sedimentary basins but arguably lie outside the study areas. 4. Data does not include the location of onshore shallow coreholes or boreholes drilled for coal or coalbed methane. 5. The data does not recognize or describe the full areas where related oil and gas exploration activity has occurred (offshore & onshore seismic, gravity and magnetic surveys) as conducted by historical oil and gas operators. 6. The data does not recognize or describe the full areas where governmental research bodies) have acquired offshore seismic or other geophysical data for assessment of crustal structure and or oil and gas resource assessments 7. The data does not show location of various known or suspected natural hydrocarbon seepages 8. The data does not show location of various existing or proposed oil or gas refining, pipelines, proposed LNG regas or mass storage facilities. Fuel transportation corridors not given.

Process_Description:
The Select By Location function was used to select features from the exploratory wells shapefile that intersect features in the CHS highwater coastline. Then the Switch Selection function was used to select all records not on land. This selection was then exported to a new shapefile. Started with 53 wells; 18 remained after the process.

Data was revieded by geologists from Chevron Canada Resources Ltd. and Shell Canada. Offshore information verified as accurate. Four wells were identified as not being offshore (3 on the coast of Haida Gwaii and one in the Fraser Delta - all coastal sites). Fourteen wells retained with the dataset.

A unique ID was assigned to this feature and polygons were dissolved on the unique ID. The feature was intersected with the BCMCA Marxan 2km x 2km planning unit grid. The database was then exported and joined (keeping only matching records) with the BCMCA planning units through the UNIT_ID field so only whole BCMCA planning units are displayed.
