This dataset identifies the location of federally issued offshore oil and gas tenures off the coast of British Columbia.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on the location of federally issued offshore oil and gas tenures for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. Data attributes have been modified from the source BCMCA data to prepare for intersection with Marxan planning units.

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Most tenures were issued in the 1960s. Moratoria on offshore oil and gas exploration and development were imposed by the Government of Canada in 1972 and by the Province of British Columbia in 1989.
This data is provided in the "as supplied" condition. Reviewers from Chevron Canada indicated that shape file for the federally issued tenures do not match the legal description. In the full offshore the tenures are basically rectangular (lines of latitude and longditude) but where they impinge on the land, the onshore parts of these blocks are truncated in the titles. Their full legal description makes it clear that they don’t go onshore. To compensate, the BCMCA "hid" the terrestrial portions of the tenures for the purposes of the atlas, but did not clip the data to any shoreline.

Each tenure holder was assigned a unique feature ID and polygons were dissolved on the unique feature IDs. The features were intersected with the BCMCA Marxan 2km x 2km planning unit grid. The database was then exported and joined (keeping only matching records) with the BCMCA planning units through the UNIT_ID field so only whole BCMCA planning units are displayed.
