- Abstract:
-
These data are a subset of the TA_CROWN_TENURES_SVW, extracted to represent Crown land tenures issued for Wind Energy.
TA_CROWN_TENURES_SVW contains the spatial representation of current Land Act tenures and applications for such tenures. These are a subset of crown land dispositions that are issued for specific purposes and periods of time under an agreement between an individual or company and the provincial government for an interest in crown land. Conveyances of ownership are not included. For example Leases, Licenses and Reserves are included, but Crown Grants and Acquisitions are not. Historical records (e.g. expired, replaced, or completed) are not included in this view. This view was created to provide the geometry for current crown land tenure activity from the Tantalis operational system.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of the data is to display complete, up-to-date information on tenures issued on Crown land for Wind Energy along the coast of British Columbia for the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. Data attributes have been modified from the source BCMCA data to prepare for intersection with Marxan planning units.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Crown Tenures are refreshed daily to the LRDW from Tantalis. Crown Tenures in both the 'application' stage (pre-issuance) and 'tenure' stage (post-issuance) are represented in this view.
The Crown Land Registry is a database that maintains records of Crown land for the province of British Columbia, Canada. This registry has been maintained since the Hudson's Bay Company first began surveying land in British Columbia in the 1850s. At one time, large old hardcopy registers were used to record this information. In the 1980s these land records were computerized and in the late 1990s a new web accessible computer system was created. This new system was called 'Tantalis' and it consolidated previous Crown land information systems.

Within the provincial tenure data, it is not uncommon for tenures which have become up for renewal to be designated as an 'Application' type tenure even though it has not yet expired. This dataset includes all 'Tenure' and 'Application' types.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Relational database with system enforced referential integrity. Code tables are predominantly used but may be out of date in the model.
- Completeness_Report:
-
See the Marine Atlas of British Columbia, p185, for reviewer comments and caveats of use.
The view of the data used by the BCMCA is out of date. Crown Tenures are refreshed daily to the LRDW from Tantalis. Crown Tenures in both the 'application' stage (pre-issuance) and 'tenure' stage (post-issuance) are represented in this view. Situations can arise where a Crown Tenure or application does not have a spatial extent defined. When this occurs the Tenure record and its associated attribute information will not appear in this view.
The Crown Tenures represented in this view are a subset of the Crown tenure types held in the Crown Land Registry system (Tantalis). For example Leases, Licenses and Reserves are included, but Crown Grants and Acquisitions are not.
Backlogs in the spatial update process may impact completeness.
Some upland tenures may still be present if the tenure type was coastal or marine in nature and if the spatial extent of the tenure overlapped the BCMCA planning units.

- Selected for all TEN_PURPOS = "WINDPOWER" (966 polygons selected)
- exported selected data to new shapefile
- identified 96 tenures overlap with the marine environment. Because some of these tenures extend over terrestrial and marine areas and the BCMCA study area (coastal planning units) overlaps land and ocean, the decision was made to retain all windpower tenures in one shape file for mapping purposes and display the colour-filled tenures under land so only those portions in the marine would be visible. Tenures overlap on land are shown as a grey outline.
- for mapping purposes display the tenures in the marine environment by TEN_SUBTYP (either "Investigative Permit" or "Licence of Occupation")

A unique ID was assigned to this feature and polygons were dissolved on the unique ID. The feature was intersected with the BCMCA Marxan 2km x 2km planning unit grid. The database was then exported and joined (keeping only matching records) with the BCMCA planning units through the UNIT_ID field so only whole BCMCA planning units are displayed.
