Description:
Abstract:
This dataset illustrates the estimated potential energy resources available in tidal flows in the Canadian Pacific EEZ. The data includes 92 sites in British Columbia potential mean power greater than 1 Mean Potential Power (MW).
Purpose:
The dataset was developed as part of a preliminary tidal current resource inventory for all Canada's oceans. The dataset has been modified from the original source to only include estimates along the coast of British Columbia for the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
The dataset was originally developed as part of a preliminary wave resource inventory for Canada's Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The estimates in this dataset are potential resources, not economically realisable resources. Energy calculations are based on preliminary estimates of existing tidal flows and no consideration has been given to the following factors: environmental impacts, technological developments and limitations in tidal power extraction, climate related factors (e.g., ice, global climate change), site location versus power grid accessibility and power demand, hydrogen economy developments, the effect of potential energy extraction schemes on existing flow conditions, and economic factors.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The tidal numbers are Mean Potential Power (MW). To convert these to gigawatt hours/year multiply by 8.760 or for megawatt hours/year multiply by 8760. The number of hours per year is 365x24=8760.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
This inventory was based on a variety of data sources including: Canadian Sailing Directions; nautical charts and tide books; tide and tidal current constituent data; and numerical tidal modelling data.
BC Hydro funded the original BC work (2002). Triton Consultants and Canadian Hydraulics Centre, National Research Council (CHC) have leveraged years of modelling to create this data. CHS/DFO provided charting and tide data, NOAA provided WW3 data and MEDS stores wave data.
This 2006 version of the data was used to inform CHC's section of the Canada Ocean Energy Atlas and was funded by Natural Resources Canada.
