- Abstract:
-
This dataset displays the output of a participatory mapping exercise conducted during and after the BCMCA Renewable Ocean Energy Mapping Workshop held November 17, 2008. It contains the combined areas of interest or promise for tidal energy development along the coast of British Columbia. The data is grid-based, with each 1x1 km cell weighted according to the measure of relative importance to assigned each area mapped by workshop participants.
- Purpose:
-
To develop a more comprehensive spatial representation of areas of interest to tidal energy development on the BC coast, as currently understood based on available information.

The areas are identified with the caveat that they are based on the participants' current understanding of available information.
See the Marine Atlas of British Columbia, p187, for reviewer comments and caveats of use.

In mapping their areas of interest, participants emphasised that their mapping is based on a limited understanding of BC's ocean energy resources. Improved understanding, technological advances, and changing economic conditions are all likely to change which areas of the BC coast may be of interest for wave and tidal energy development in the future. Thus, planners, regulators, and other interest groups should not view the maps resulting from this workshop as a definitive picture of the ocean energy sector's areas of interest. Rather, the maps provide a useful indication of current areas of interest that can serve as a source of guidance for planning and decision-making in the present and near future (5-10 years)

The BC Marine Conservation Analysis, in cooperation with the Ocean Renewable Energy Group, convened a workshop on November 17, 2008 with industry representatives, scientists, and resource managers to develop a more comprehensive spatial representation of areas of interest to wave and tidal energy development on the BC coast. Workshop participants (1) reviewed existing maps illustrating wave and tidal energy potential, (2) developed criteria additional to energy potential that influence the potential of sites for energy capture developments, and (3) individually mapped the areas of interest or promise for energy development on the BC coast, assigning measures of relative importance to each area they mapped.
Neil Davis led the workshop and the mapping exercise. Neil explained that the mapping exercise was based on a method that has been used elsewhere in BC and in California. He showed sample maps from the processes where this mapping method was used.
The Workshop participants were asked to:
1. Draw polygons on marine charts indicating areas of potential development on the BC coast;
2. Identify whether the polygons were for tidal or wave energy development; and
3. "Spend" $100 among all polygons to indicate their relative importance.
o Higher amounts = areas of more interest/promise
Areas of interest were hand drawn on 11x17" black and white copies of nautical charts which ranged in scale from 1:700,000 to 1:900,000.

Polygons drawn by mapping participants were digitized from hard copy maps using the "heads up" method; an identical map was displayed in the GIS and the hand drawn areas were entered using a mouse. Each polygon was attributed with the name of the contributor, the type of energy mapped (tidal or wave), and the assigned "value" (portion of $100). Note that although each participant had up to $100 in value to assign, some did not assign full value to all their mapped areas.
Data from all participants was merged into one Geodatabase.

The polygon values were revised to account for the precision with which each polygon was drawn. The polygons were then overlaid with 500 m x 500 m grid cells that covered the study area. For each grid cell, the number of polygons and the summed value of those polygons was calculated. This was performed in ArcView 3.2 using the them.overlappingpollys_2_grid Avenue script available from ArcScripts. From these values, the arithmetic mean for each grid cell was calculated.

A Kernel Density Analysis was performed in ArcView 3.2 using a 5 km search radius, a 1 km cell size, and the mean value of each grid cell as the weight. The density analysis ensures that the values displayed considered polygons that were within close proximity but not overlapping and helps to smooth the results to ensure that no one person's polygons can be identified. The values in the resulting density grid were standardized and converted to integers.

Data from the 10th workshop participant was missed on the first analysis and initially only 9 summary maps were used in the analysis. The 10th map was added in July 2009. The previous 3 process steps were re-run to generate this revised raster.

Raster converted to polygons. 0 value polygon deleted.
The polygons were not clipped to the coastline because that would have affected the precision at which they were drawn and would have affected the calculations for their ultimate score.
