Description:
Abstract:
The Canadian Wind Energy Atlas is based on a set of quadrilateral meso-scale domains called "tiles". The juxtaposition of 65 partially overlapping tiles constitutes a representation of Canada's wind potential. On each tile, climate is characterized by a large set of weather conditions, providing over 200 different possible atmospheric states. The climatic modelling finds a spatial solution for the wind flow in each of those states. Results are then post-processed with a statistical model representing the dominant winds in order to obtain weighted average wind velocities. Full analysis methodology can be found at the following website: <http://www.windatlas.ca/en/methodology.php>.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to display a representation of mean annual wind energy potential (watts per square meter) at 30 meters above the Earth's surface on the coast of British Columbia for the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. Data attributes have been modified from the source BCMCA data to prepare for intersection with Marxan planning units.

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Further information including methodology for data collection and preparation can be found at the Canadian Wind Energy Atlas website. <http://www.windatlas.ca/en/index.php>
The Canadian Wind Energy Atlas provides information on mean wind speed and mean wind energy at 30, 50 and 80 meters above the Earth's surface annually and for winter, spring, summer and fall. Information about the frequency of occurrence of 12 wind sectors and 27 wind classes is also available annually and for winter, spring, summer and fall.

Canadian Wind Energy Atlas, Environment Canada. Tiles 45, 51, 52, 55, 56, 57, 60 and 64 for 30 meters above the Earth's surface.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Tiles were downloaded from the Canadian Wind Energy Atlas as MapInfo MID/MIF files. There are 65 partially overlapping tiles covering all of Canada. For each tile, data was available at 30, 50 and 80 meters above the Earth's surface. The following tiles covered British Columbia: 45, 51, 52, 55, 56, 57, 60 and 64.
Each tile contained 10 files. Five files contained mean wind speed and mean wind energy for five different periods: annual, winter (December, January, February), spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), and fall (September, October, November). Five additional tiles contained UHR variables relating to the frequency of occurrence of 12 wind sectors and 27 wind classes for the same five time periods.
FME software was employed to convert the MID/MIF files for annual mean wind speed and mean wind energy at 30 meters above the Earth's Surface to ESRI shape files. Shapes were then imported to one Geodatabase and then merged to create one file for the west coast.

Data was projected from it's native format to BC Albers. The original source projection had the following specifications: - The datum is a sphere of radius 6371000.0 m - Stereographic projection - Central meridian at 100 degrees West - The initial projection plane is the north polar plane at latitude 90 degrees - This factor rescale the data projected in the north polar plane in order to have the final data projected in the 60 degrees north plane.

Process_Description:
Data was clipped to Canada's Pacific EEZ, the Canada-US border and an arbitrary line a minimum of 25 km from the BC coastline. This reduced the number of cells from 242208 to 59955 and allowed production of a cartographically pleasing product masked by the BC coastline.
Note, the BCMCA also has the full provincial version of the data available with all steps undertaken prior to the clip.

A unique ID was assigned to these features and polygons were dissolved on the unique IDs. The features were intersected with the BCMCA Marxan 2km x 2km planning unit grid. The database was then exported and joined (keeping only matching records) with the BCMCA planning units through the UNIT_ID field so only whole BCMCA planning units are displayed.
