Abstract:

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and socio-economic spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Purpose:

To delineate the locations reported to the Canadian Coast Guard of pollutant spills along the BC coast.

Built from a table of X & Y values submitted to us by the Canadian Coast Guard. The table also contains information on spill origin, location name and incident number. Dataset: Excel table of x&y values. Extent: BC Coast.
This map displays the recorded locations of 3,577 pollutant spills reported to the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) from 2006 to 2012. Spills types include any pollutant but are usually fuel and oil. There’s no minimum spill amount that requires notification. Spills are reported regardless of size. The range of spill volume is .01 litres and up; however these quantities are usually estimates as it can be difficult to determine actual amounts.
Spill locations were recorded accurately from 2006 onward. Prior to 2006, coordinates were generally not recorded and the given descriptions are not specific enough to accurately determine spill location. For these reasons, spills prior to 2006 are not displayed on the map.
Spill locations are separated into three categories: Land Spills, Ship Spills and Unknown Land or Sea Spills. These categories indicate the origin of the spill as reported to the Coast Guard. Land spills cover marinas, terminals, coastal fuel/oil facilities and wharfs. The ship spills category captures all reported spills from ships. The unknown category captures those spills on land or sea where the origin was not reported.
