Description:
Abstract:
Twenty-five British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. (BC Ferries) routes, as well as twenty-one routes serviced by other ferry operators.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to display complete, up-to-date information on Ferry Routes along the coast of British Columbia for the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Original Ferry Routes dataset source from Coastal Resource Information Management System (CRIMS). Data was originally collected to identify important use areas in the event of an oil spill.
This dataset has been updated by the BCMCA in order to include missing routes and add attributes for all routes, including name, type of service, operator, number of round trips and frequency of use.
NOTE: The feature data is more up-to-date than the marxan-ready data for this feature.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
BC Ferries was contacted by Monterey Environmental Services in 2008 for route information and use statistics, no response provided by October 2008. Other information on the number of round trips is based on information published on operator websites. Albion ferry no longer exists. Data issues exist near Bella Bella (an orphan section for Alaska ferry and gap in the route for BC ferry).
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Routes mapped may not be the exact route followed. Route mapping may be improved with data sourced from individual operators.
Completeness_Report:
Three of the unregulated routes listed in the Coastal Ferry Services Contract are not included in this data: - Prince Rupert to Lax Kw'alaams; - Prince Rupert to Hartley Bay (and other ports: Metlakatla, Kitkatla, Oona River); and - Ahousat - Hot Springs Cove - Tofino.
Additionally the following ferry routes are not included with this data: - Victoria Harbour Ferry Company (passenger only). - Marine Link Transportation Ltd (primarily freight services with a variable route from Campbell River to Mainland Inlets, Desolation Sound, and the Discovery Islands. - Several smaller or irregularly scheduled freight barging or water taxi services.

Process_Description:
Re-digitized ferry routes, adding those that were missing. Updates sourced from the provincial Digital Roads Atlas (DRA), mariner guidebooks and appropriate internet websites. Added attributes for all routes, including name, type of service, operator, number of round trips and frequency of use.
Crossing round trip data was sourced from the scheduled sailings on each route. For routes managed by BC Ferries, the number of round trips for each route was derived from published data in the British Columbia Ferry Services Annual Report of 2008. For all other ferry routes this number has been approximated based on the posted annual scheduling of each route.
Frequency of use was assigned as per the entity attribute description.

Modified some routes via visual comparison with digital nautical charts to ensure routes followed middle of channels, did not overlap land, and ended at the correct docks/terminals. Changes included: - Port Hardy to mid coast route - split the shape into 2, changes some route to modify turns, and mainly at harbours, added 980 m - Rupert to Skidegate - adjusted route between Rupert and Stephans Island (based on ship tracking) and to correct docks at either end - added 1.5km to route - crosses different planning units - Digby Island - 200 m added - extended routes to berths - Bellingham to Rupert - added 200m - Rupert harbour - prince Rupert to Alaska -added 150 meters - moved route to correct dock in Rupert. - Haida ferry - added 14 meters - correct docks - Port Hardy to Rupert - added 750 m - minor adjustments, changes at berths - Albion ferry - shortened by 200m - gold river - added 200m, mainly at docks, some minor adjustments on routes for land - Gambier-keets - correct berthing location on Keats Is - added 800m - Nanaimo Harbour ferries: corrected berth at Nanaimo, shortened 2 routes by 350m - Swartz bay to minor gulf islands - 50 m longer - minor route adjustments
NOTE: These changes were not incorporated into the Marxan data file for this feature.
