Description:
Abstract:
This data represents the location of anchorages in coastal British Columbia as well as safe boat havens identified by the Council of British Columbia Yacht Clubs (CBCYC).
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on anchorages and safe boat havens along the coast of British Columbia for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. Data attributes have been modified from the source BCMCA data to prepare for intersection with Marxan planning units.

The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Province of British Columbia - Coastal Resource Information Management System (1992-2001): Data were created through a variety of projects to identify important use areas in the event of an oil spill and for marine planning. Projects combined to create this CRIMS dataset include: - Southern Georgia Strait Oil Spill Response Information System (OSRIS) (1994, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - Northern Georgia Strait OSRIS (1995, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - Johnstone Strait OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - Central Coast OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - West Coast Vancouver Island OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - North Coast OSRIS (1998, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - QCI OSRIS (1998, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.)
For each of these projects data sources include CHS Charts and other maps, mapbooks, private industry publications, focus groups, various published commonly-used directories or BC Ministry's or Municipality's published works. Any of these sources may be listed using their full name or, optionally, under their commonly-known acronym i.e. CC TRI (Central Coast Tourism Resource Inventory) or NC DD (North Coast Docks and Destinations). Some of BC Ministry projects incorporated into the OSRIS Atlas projects include: - Coastal Tourism Resource Inventory (1991-1993, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by the ARA Consulting Group) - Central Coast Tourism Resource Inventory (1995, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - Vancouver Island CORE (1994, 1:250,000 scale) - Central Coast LRMP (1998, 1:250,000 scale, data collected by the Outdoor Recreation Council)
Anchorages were only mapped for 3 projects and included in this compilation: Northern Strait of Georgia, Johnstone Strait and Central Coast (821 anchorages).
After the data from the 3 projects were merged, 148 Safe Boat Havens were added to the dataset.

Compared and merged overlapping datasets related to CBCYC Safe Boat Havens. Each point was examined before inclusion in the final dataset to ensure no duplicates. The points were checked against Canadian Hydrographic Service charts, and in some cases spelling was corrected and locations changed.
Also reviewed the Safe Boat Havens against the list published on the Council of BC Yacht Clubs website to ensure no other additions required.
8 additional points added.

- Reviewed all anchorage and safe boat haven points against CHS Nautical charts, relocating some based on exposure and depths and deleting others where the locations were essentially the same. Retained 989 of the original CRIMS anchorage points. - Added Safe Boat Havens identified in provincial tenures using the centroid of each tenure. - Added a field for safe boat havens and coded all Safe Boat Havens as such. - Added in additional points from provincial studies (Tourism and LRMP). - Added source project and data source for each record for newly added records. - Standardized content of database attributes.

Created ID field and assign a unique four digit FEATURE_ID. Spatial join of points to Marxan 2km x 2km planning unit (PU) grid and COUNT number of points in the PU UNIT_ID. Resulting output of only PU's containing this feature with the unique feature ID, PU UNIT_ID and JOIN_COUNT (number of features in the PU) put into geodatabase - separate files wthin the geodatabase for each anchorage feature.

Populated the new field with the JOIN_COUNT value and then joined the feature to a complete PU layer using UNIT_ID as the common field. Repeated steps for each feature. Then selected only PUs that had a value greater than 0 in any of the FEATURE_ID fields and exported data as new shape file. Deleted extraneous fields from joins.
