Description:
Abstract:
This data represents the location of coastal British Columbia coastal campsites, kayak use sites and kayak staging areas.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on coastal campsites, kayak use sites and kayak staging areas along the coast of British Columbia for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Structure of the attribute database is based on the CRIMS source data for Coastal BC Campsites (NOT Coastal BC Marine Kayaking Destinations) and the source data of kayak campsites from the BC Marine Trail Network Association via the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. 340 sites from the CRIMS dataset that were duplicated in the BC Marine Trail Network Assocation dataset were removed.
The BC Marine Trails Network (BCMTN) will be a series of interconnecting marine trails along the entire BC coastline designed with frequent access points, stopovers and campsites for users of small, beachable watercraft. The average distance between the most essential primary sites is about nine nautical miles (17 km). Carefully chosen alternate sites to give paddlers further options and additional safety margins. Many of the sites are located on Crown land and most are already familiar to paddlers. The BC Marine Trails Network Association (BCMTNA) is a BC based registered society dedicated to the creation of a marine network of campsites and access points along the coastline of British Columbia. The BCMTNA is comprised of ten paddling clubs from Vancouver Island, Saltspring Island and the mainland of BC. Each club assigns designated representatives to liaise and volunteer with the BCMTNA. These volunteers have logged significant hours 'ground proofing' sites: inventorying campsites, launches and stopovers along the network of trails. A healthy part of the BCMTNA volunteer work is working with Recreation Sites and Trails BC, our government 'partners'. They meet with government technicians and managers on a regular basis to not only exchange information, but to get advice and help on the progress of a trail. The history of the BC marine trails has two distinct phases: the BCMTA (BC Marine Trails Association) and the BCMNTA (BC Marine Trails Network Association). In the 1990s, Peter McGee, author of Kayak Routes of the Pacific Northwest Coast introduced the concept of a linear route running from the Washington State border to the Alaska border. He gained support within the paddling community and formed the BCMTA. At Blackberry Point on Valdez Island, this original group established the first trail campsite, equipped with a fine composting toilet, and set up a rest stop and toilet on Musgrave Point, Saltspring Island. The timing was not quite right for the marine trails project despite enormous support from companies and paddlers. Restraints and cutbacks within government and a low interest from the public were two of the reasons that the project did not forge ahead. Chris Ladner, a pioneering BCMTA member, tried to keep the trail afloat along with the support of individuals like Ray Pillman of the Outdoor Recreational Council (ORC) and Charlie Cornfield, then a recreation officer for the Discovery Coast Recreation District. However, much of the preliminary work and dream was kept intact, waiting for a more opportune time. In 2007, paddlers renewed their interest in a marine trail. Why? Given the limited number of coveted campsites and interest in these prime locations from various private individuals and companies, a strong need was again seen for a group that represented the public’s interests. There was a flurry of activity on the WestCoastPaddler.com Forum as paddlers from various different coastal clubs discussed their common concerns. As a result of this renewed awareness, on December 15th, 2007, representatives from paddling clubs from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland met with Ray Pillman of ORC, Charlie Cornfield of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, John Kimantas, author of the Wild Coast series of guide books, Dan Millsip and Mick Allen of WestCoastPaddler.com, and Peter McGee and Chris Ladner of the defunct BC Marine Trail Association, at the Outdoor Recreation Council offices in Vancouver. Within the next year the BCMNTA formed under the leadership of Stephanie Meinke. Comprised of 8 directors and a 'task force' of representatives of 9 paddling clubs and other advisors, the BCMTNA began the massive task of identifying potential sites along the BC coastline, estimated to be over 27 000 km in length. To date, approximately 1,500 sites have been inventoried and a start has been made on a thorough ground proofing process. On May 14, 2011, the BCMNTA reached a historical moment: the opening of two marine trails in conjunction with its partner Recreation Sites and Trails BC, a division of the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations. The Vancouver Island West Coast North trail from Port Hardy to Tofino and three parallel Gulf Islands trails from Victoria to Nanaimo were opened with much fanfare. Planning work is currently underway on several other trails sections, including Desolation Sound, Johnstone Strait, the Broughton Archipelago, Southwest Vancouver Island and the Discovery Islands.

Use_Constraints:
Not to be used for navigational purpose. For general information only. This dataset is subject to the terms and conditions of the data use agreements for the source datasets.
The accuracy of the information provided with this data is not guaranteed. The information may be incomplete or incorrect. It is not intended as a substitute for detailed official Canadian marine navigation charts or other authorized maps and guides. Paddlers should seek information and advice from as many sources as possible, especially before departing for an unfamiliar paddling area.
Ocean paddling is a high-risk activity requiring skill and judgment. Weather and sea conditions are constantly changing. Even with the highest level of experience, it is not always possible to identify or control all risks and the potential for injury or loss of life cannot be eliminated. There are many uncontrolled hazards on foreshores and in rough coastal terrain that could result in serious personal injury. Users of the information presented on this site assume all the risks associated with its use.

Processing work for the BC Marine Trail Network Association data: The GIS data was developed originally by Jeremy Webb of RRL Recreation Resources under contract to the BC Ministry of Forests, Vancouver Region circa March 2000. Data was held by the BC Government as a GIS shapefile and binders of additional material showing a considerable amount of dated material on most of the inventoried campsites. Much of the GIS content is likely based on some of the source datasets listed in data sources. Data was provided to the BCMCA via Charlie Cornfield of (at the time) BC Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. Stephanie Meinke (sjmeinke@shaw.ca) and Peter McLaren (mclaren47@shaw.ca) helped broker access to the data.

Stephanie Meinke (president@bcmarinetrails.org) started to compile information from BCMTNA data summaries and converted their GIS maps from PDF format to jpeg format so that they could easily be edited. He placed information from Peter McGees and John Kimantis onto these maps color coded to easily identify the source. There was no pre-determined data schema, but the database included latitude and longitude, a mapped location, a photograph and site description.
Stephanie Meinke suspended his process circa October 2008 and new inventory information coming in was sent to Janis Leach (JanisJoy.Leach@gov.bc.ca), recreation technician working for Charlie Cornfield at the BC Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts (now BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations). She was trying to move more quickly on inventory, including linking earlier data with map locations. This process step may have continued until the data was acquired by the BCMCA in February 2010.
Members of the BC Marine Trails Network Association have added their considerable knowledge to the attributes in the database. Each recorded site undergoes a peer review process before being added to the database. From this list, specific potential sites are groundproofed (where necessary information is lacking).
In March 2009 BCMCA (Neil Davis, BCMCA Human Use Data Coordinator), initiated contact with Vincent Delogne vin100@gmail.com of the BC Marine Trail Network Association develop a data sharing agreement to gain access to a GIS-ready version of the BCMTNA dataset. This was followed up on by Rick Page (then BCMCA Human Use Data Coordinator) in July-August 2009 where it was identified that Paul Tataryn, regional manager with the BC Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Recreation Sites and Trails BC (now part of BC Ministry of Forest, Land and Natural Resource Operations) would be the responsible party with whom a data sharing agreement would be signed. In February 2010 BCMCA Project Assistant Jaclyn McPhadden contacted Paul Tataryn, and after signing a data sharing agreement the data was provided to the BCMCA.
