Description:
Abstract:
This data represents the location of scuba diving sites in coastal British Columbia.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on scuba diving sites along the coast of British Columbia for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Province of British Columbia - Coastal Resource Information Management System (1992-2001): Data were created through a variety of projects to identify important use areas in the event of an oil spill and for marine planning. Projects combined to create this CRIMS dataset include: - Southern Georgia Strait Oil Spill Response Information System (OSRIS) (1994, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - Northern Georgia Strait OSRIS (1995, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - Johnstone Strait OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - Central Coast OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - West Coast Vancouver Island OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - North Coast OSRIS (1998, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - QCI OSRIS (1998, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.)
For each of these projects data sources include CHS Charts and other maps, mapbooks, private industry publications, focus groups, various published commonly-used directories or BC Ministry's or Municipality's published works. Any of these sources may be listed using their full name or, optionally, under their commonly-known acronym i.e. CC TRI (Central Coast Tourism Resource Inventory) or NC DD (North Coast Docks and Destinations).
Some of BC Ministry projects and guidebooks incorporated into the OSRIS Atlas projects include: - Coastal Tourism Resource Inventory (1991-1993, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by the ARA Consulting Group) - Central Coast Tourism Resource Inventory (1995, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - Docks and Destinations (guidebook by Peter Vassilopoulos, Jan 1996) - Exploring the North Coast of BC (guidebook by Don Douglas and Reanne Hemingway-Douglas, 1997) - Vancouver Island CORE (1994, 1:250,000 scale) - Central Coast LRMP (1998, 1:250,000 scale, data collected by the Outdoor Recreation Council) - 99 Dives from the San Juan Islands in Washington to the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island in British Columbia by Betty Pratt-Johnson (circa 1994 ISBN 1-895811-18-X) - 101 dives from the mainland of Washington and British Columbia by Betty Pratt-Johnson (circa 1994 ISBN 1-895811-20-1) - Backroads Mapbook, Vol 2 Vancouver Island (by Mussio Ventures, 1994) - Northwest Tourism Resource Inventory (1996, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - BC Parks brochures (circa 1996) - Vancouver Island CORE process (1994, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.)

The data set represents the distribution dive sites the BC coast as a series of georeferenced polygons. Currently, data included in the system has been gathered from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) staff or individuals under contract to DFO who are known to have knowledge of the spatial distribution of one or more marine resource or habitats on the BC coast. The majority of the data came from interviews with regional DFO habitat and fishery officers. Reviewed location of BCMCA dive sites and Parks Canada Dive sites with Andy Lamb, Diver with Pacific Marine Life Surveys Inc. Co-Author - "Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest" and "Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest". Using a GIS showing the location known sites (BCMCA and Parks Canada sources) and the digital CHS Nautical charts, Andy identified correct location for many sites, added many previously not located sites. Sites were categorized as dive sites or "data only sites" for which he recorded sightings of invertebrates, which BCMCA could access to inform data gaps in the invertebrate datasets.

All scuba sites identified by Andy (529 sites) were assigned latitude and longitude coordinates to inform Andy's database. Sites which were data only points were stripped out of the dataset, leaving 171 newly identified dive sites. A descriptive site name, based on the name identified in Andy's database, were added to the LOCATION field. Sites not already in the BCMCA dataset identified by Parks Canada were added (126 sites). Existing sites had attribute information added, including LOCATION and TYPE, based on Parks Canada or internet mapping sources. All sites were reviewed to ensure they were spatially distinct and geographically precise in relation to bathymetry shown on the nautical charts. The database was reviewed for spelling and content was standardized (changing all caps, common sources etc.
