Description:
Abstract:
These data are a subset of the TA_CROWN_TENURES_SVW, extracted to represent Crown land tenures issued for the Environment, Conservation and Recreation in coastal and marine environments.
TA_CROWN_TENURES_SVW contains the spatial representation of current Land Act tenures and applications for such tenures. These are a subset of crown land dispositions that are issued for specific purposes and periods of time under an agreement between an individual or company and the provincial government for an interest in crown land. Conveyances of ownership are not included. For example Leases, Licenses and Reserves are included, but Crown Grants and Acquisitions are not. Historical records (e.g. expired, replaced, or completed) are not included in this view. This view was created to provide the geometry for current crown land tenure activity from the Tantalis operational system.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to display complete, up-to-date information on tenures issued on Crown land for the Environment, Conservation and Recreation along the coast of British Columbia for the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses. Data attributes have been modified from the source BCMCA data to prepare for intersection with Marxan planning units.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
Crown Tenures are refreshed daily to the LRDW from Tantalis. Crown Tenures in both the 'application' stage (pre-issuance) and 'tenure' stage (post-issuance) are represented in this view.
The Crown Land Registry is a database that maintains records of Crown land for the province of British Columbia, Canada. This registry has been maintained since the Hudson's Bay Company first began surveying land in British Columbia in the 1850s. At one time, large old hardcopy registers were used to record this information. In the 1980s these land records were computerized and in the late 1990s a new web accessible computer system was created. This new system was called 'Tantalis' and it consolidated previous Crown land information systems.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Within the provincial tenure data, it is not uncommon for tenures which have become up for renewal to be designated as an 'Application' type tenure even though it has not yet expired. This dataset includes all 'Tenure' and 'Application' types.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Relational database with system enforced referential integrity. Code tables are predominantly used but may be out of date in the model.
Completeness_Report:
See the Marine Atlas of British Columbia, p237, for reviewer comments and caveats of use.
The view of the data used by the BCMCA is out of date. Crown Tenures are refreshed daily to the LRDW from Tantalis. Crown Tenures in both the 'application' stage (pre-issuance) and 'tenure' stage (post-issuance) are represented in this view. Situations can arise where a Crown Tenure or application does not have a spatial extent defined. When this occurs the Tenure record and its associated attribute information will not appear in this view.
The Crown Tenures represented in this view are a subset of the Crown tenure types held in the Crown Land Registry system (Tantalis). For example Leases, Licenses and Reserves are included, but Crown Grants and Acquisitions are not.
Backlogs in the spatial update process may impact completeness.
Some upland tenures may still be present if the tenure type was coastal or marine in nature and if the spatial extent of the tenure overlapped the BCMCA planning units.

Process_Description:
Created ID field and assigned a unique four digit FEATURE_ID to each feature. Intersect with Marxan 2km x 2km planning unit (PU) grid. Dissolve on ID (unique feature number) and UNIT_ID (unique PU number). Add field (AREA) and calculate geometry (m2). Resulting output put into geodatabase - one file wthin the geodatabase for all environmental tenure features.

Selected by each unique FEATURE_ID and exported to a shapefile. Added new field using the unique four digit FEATURE_ID as the field name. Populated the new field with the AREA value (m2) and then joined the feature to a complete PU layer using UNIT_ID as the common field. Repeated steps for each feature. Then selected only PUs that had a value greater than 0 in any of the FEATURE_ID fields and exported data as new shape file. Deleted extraneous fields from joins.
