Description:
Abstract:
This data represents the location of coastal British Columbia boating / recreational and pleasure craft cruising routes.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data is to portray complete, up-to-date information on recreational and pleasure craft boating/cruising routes along the coast of British Columbia for use in the BCMCA Atlas and Marxan analyses.
The British Columbia Marine Conservation Analysis (BCMCA) is a collaborative project assembling and analyzing spatial information about Canada's Pacific Ocean. The overall goal of the BCMCA is to identify marine areas of high conservation value and marine areas important to human use. Results of the project are intended to inform and help advance marine planning initiatives in BC by providing collaborative, peer-reviewed scientific analyses based on the best ecological and human use spatial data at scales relevant to a BC coast-wide analysis.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Some attribute information may be incomplete, depending on the source of the data content.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Routes mapped may not be the exact route followed, but represent an area or channel in which boating / cruising was recorded to have occurred for recreational or tourism purposes.
Completeness_Report:
Data sources are from guide books, identified by tourism operators or identified by recreational organizations. They represent routes used rather than everywhere a marine cruiser can travel or has travelled.
Known gaps exist in the Strait of Georgia and Southern Vancouver Island.

Province of British Columbia - Coastal Resource Information Management System Province of British Columbia - Coastal Resource Information Management System (1992-2001): Data were created through a variety of projects to identify important use areas in the event of an oil spill and for marine planning. Projects combined to create this CRIMS dataset include: - Southern Georgia Strait Oil Spill Response Information System (OSRIS) (1994, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - Northern Georgia Strait OSRIS (1995, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - Johnstone Strait OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - Central Coast OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - West Coast Vancouver Island OSRIS (1996, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by LGL Ltd.) - North Coast OSRIS (1998, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - QCI OSRIS (1998, 1:40,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.)
For each of these projects data sources include CHS Charts and other maps, mapbooks, private industry publications, focus groups, various published commonly-used directories or BC Ministry's or Municipality's published works. Any of these sources may be listed using their full name or, optionally, under their commonly-known acronym i.e. CC TRI (Central Coast Tourism Resource Inventory) or NC DD (North Coast Docks and Destinations). Some of BC Ministry projects incorporated into the OSRIS Atlas projects include: - Coastal Tourism Resource Inventory (1991-1993, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by the ARA Consulting Group) - Central Coast Tourism Resource Inventory (1995, 1:250,000 scale, prepared by Clover Point Cartographics Ltd.) - Vancouver Island CORE (1994, 1:250,000 scale) - Central Coast LRMP (1998, 1:250,000 scale, data collected by the Outdoor Recreation Council)

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
- Downloaded provincial CRIMS data (2109 records). Reviewed for major gaps, which were found on west coast Vancouver Island and Strait of Georgia. - 1010 Recreational boating routes added for west coast Vancouver Island and Strait of Georgia sourced from Tourism Resource Inventory for Vancouver Island (1996) data (126 route segments) and local mariner guide books (884 route segments). Guide books included:
- Best anchorages of the Inside Passage : British Columbia's south coast from the Gulf Islands to Cape Caution (2006), Anne Vipond, William Kelly. - Gulf Islands & Vancouver Island: Victoria & Sooke to Nanaimo (1998), Anne & Laurence Yeadon-Jones. - Vancouver, Howe Sound & the Sunshine Coast: including Princess Louisa Inlet & Jedediah Island (2003), Anne & Laurence Yeadon-Jones. - Docks and destinations with GPS waypoints: a coastal guide to marinas, fuel and moorage facilities in the Pacific Northwest (2005), Peter Vassilopoulos. - Waggoner cruising guide, 2007: the complete boating reference. Robert Hale & Co., Weatherly Press Division. - Exploring Vancouver Island's west coast: a cruising guide (1994), Don Douglass. - Cruising guide to British Columbia, vol. 1 : Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island from Sooke to Courtenay (1989), Bill Wolferstan. - Cruising guide to British Columbia, vol. 2: Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands (1987), Bill Wolferstan.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
- Removed overlapping content where multiple lines represent the same route. This was mostly the result of overlapping content from the merged CRIMS data and from adding all the Vancouver Island Tourism Resource Inventory data without first removing duplicate lines with existing data. - Added route information from other sources (provincial tourism studies) where the route was not already included in CRIMS (removed overlap from all source data first). Where similar routes existed in the original CRIMS source data and more recent sources, kept the source with the more precise geometry, newer data or most attributes. Data was added by deleting all overlaps then appending datasets to retain attributes. - Central Coast LRMP (2 routes) - Campbell River TOS (1 route) - Nootka TOS (7 routes) - North Coast TOS (14 routes) - Vancouver Island TRI (8 routes retained from previous process step)
- Started with 3119 route segments, with additions noted above and deletions due to overlap, resulted in 3015 route segments. - New routes added by the BCMCA have a B_CRS_R_ID value of 0 - Modified route segments to match CHS coastline as required where source data overlapped land. - added source of route in comment field.
