  • Hi,

    I am trying to use this layer in a Marxan analysis but I can’t decipher the ID attribute field. I am assuming it’s similar to the Benthic Classes ID but I can’t find a breakdown of what the numbers mean in the metadata/XML file. Any chance someone can share that information with me?

    • Hi Jacob,

      The ID field is a combination of numeric IDs for the coastal class (first 3 digits) and ecosection (last 1 or 2 digits). The ecosection codes can be found in the ecosection file, available for download from the BCMCA data repository or DataBC. The coastal classes codes are the BCMCA’s Marxan code for coastal classes and are as follows:

      201 – Rock Ramp wide
      202 – Rock Platform wide
      203 – Rock Cliff narrow
      204 – Rock Ramp narrow
      205 – Rock Platform narrow
      206 – Rock Ramp with Gravel Beach wide
      207 – Rock Platform with Gravel Beach wide
      208 – Rock Cliff with Gravel Beach narrow
      209 – Rock Ramp with Gravel Beach narrow
      210 – Rock Platform with Gravel Beach narrow
      211 – Rock Ramp with Sand and Gravel Beach wide
      212 – Rock Platform with Sand and Gravel Beach wide
      213 – Rock Cliff with Sand and Gravel Beach narrow
      214 – Rock Ramp with Sand and Gravel Beach narrow
      215 – Rock Platform with Sand and Gravel Beach narrow

how to access the restricted data

This feature was created from 1 raw data layer. Each data layer has a custodian and different restrictions as to which types of data BCMCA may distribute on this website. The unrestricted feature and Marxan-ready data are available to download at the map & data tab. To gain access to the restricted data, please go through the following process:

  1. Determine whether you are interested in the feature data or Marxan-ready data. (See the Glossary for descriptions on these data types.)
  2. Using the info below, make a list of the custodians you will need to contact for permission to use the data. Please note that many of the features use similar data layers and require permission from the same custodians. Also note that BCMCA does not supply the contact information for the custodians, but they can be found through web searches. Then contact each of the custodians directly, indicating:
    • which features you are requesting permission to have data for
    • whether you are requesting the feature data or Marxan-ready data
  3. When all of the required permissions have been received for a feature or set of features, please forward the email confirmations to the BCMCA data custodian at info@bcmca.ca to obtain the data.
